Hace veinte años trabajo para una editorial cuyo perfil está enfocado en el público infantil y juvenil. Para mí, todos y cada uno de los libros, de las historias o artículos periodísticos a ilustrar en estos años de desempeño como ilustradora, no dejan de ser una fuente de continuo aprendizaje. Digamos que es una mezcla de un tanto por ciento de deleite y otro tanto de desafío. En mis años de estudiante en la Academia de Arte tuve las primeras vislumbres de la complejidad y belleza de este oficio, pero entonces no imaginaba lo abarcador de este universo y el reto permanente que representaba.
For twenty years I have been working for a publishing house whose profile is focused on children and young people. For me, each and every one of the books, stories or newspaper articles to be illustrated in these years of work as an illustrator, has been a source of continuous learning. Let's say it's a mixture of a certain amount of delight and a certain amount of challenge. In my years as a student at the Academy of Art I had the first glimpses of the complexity and beauty of this profession, but at that time I did not imagine how encompassing this universe was and the permanent challenge it represented.
Desde mi experiencia, creo que la ilustración infantil como modalidad, es una de las más difíciles y complejas, porque se trata de lograr simplicidad sin ser simplista, ser claro sin ser obvio y estar a la altura de las capacidades lúdicras e imaginativas de los niños. Creo que el sector infantil tiene sus particularidades y nunca se le puede subestimar. Estamos hablando del lector del siglo XXI, que tiene la particularidad de ser más visual. Es un hecho que el influjo y predominio de los nuevos lenguajes audiovisuales han dado a la imagen en movimiento un protagonismo extraordinario y esto ha repercutido en la tradicional articulación texto/imagen generando un lector más exigente en el sentido de que demanda un rol más activo a la hora de efectuar una lectura significativa.
From my experience, I believe that children's illustration as a modality is one of the most difficult and complex, because it is about achieving simplicity without being simplistic, being clear without being obvious and being at the height of the children's playful and imaginative capacities. I believe that the children's sector has its particularities and can never be underestimated. We are talking about the 21st century reader, who has the particularity of being more visual. It is a fact that the influence and predominance of the new audiovisual languages have given the moving image an extraordinary prominence and this has had repercussions on the traditional text/image articulation, generating a more demanding reader in the sense that demands a more active role when it comes to a meaningful reading.
En la ilustración, en general, la imagen va más allá que lo que se muestra, su naturaleza es simultáneamente denotativa y connotativa pues bajo la piel de sus significantes subyacen asociaciones de índole subjetiva, pero también sociales y culturales. El ilustrador no solo está al servicio del contenido del texto, sino que está recreando y salvaguardando todo un imaginario colectivo. La forma de ilustrar en sí misma transmite valores estéticos y éticos por lo cual creo que la ilustración infantil conlleva una responsabilidad mayor por su función educativa. En ese sentido considero que es un público más exigente porque al apropiarse de los lenguajes, los van transformando críticamente; este público lleva en sí la semilla del futuro por eso son vitales para el desarrollo cultural de todo país. Creo que es importante ser muy celosos con los niveles de lenguaje y comprensión que demanda cada etapa de la infancia, sin subestimarlas en lo más mínimo. Combinar el aspecto intelectual de las herramientas que nos brinda la profesión, con el aspecto emotivo de mantener vivo al niño que fuimos y dejarnos llevar confiados de su mano.
In illustration, in general, the image goes beyond what is shown, its nature is simultaneously denotative and connotative because under the skin of its signifiers underlie associations of a subjective nature, but also social and cultural. The illustrator is not only at the service of the content of the text, but is recreating and safeguarding a whole collective imaginary. The way of illustrating in itself transmits aesthetic and ethical values, which is why I believe that children's illustration carries a greater responsibility for its educational function. In that sense, I consider that it is a more demanding public because by appropriating the languages, they are critically transforming them; they carry in themselves the seed of the future, which is why they are vital for the cultural development of any country. I think it is important to be very careful with the levels of language and understanding that each stage of childhood demands, without underestimating them in the least. Combine the intellectual aspect of the tools that the profession offers us, with the emotional aspect of keeping alive the child we were and letting ourselves be carried confidently by his hand.
Creo que es importante investigar y estudiar, acercarse con respeto y honestidad al texto a ilustrar, no ser un lector pasivo y lineal, sino un lector creativo capaz de implicarse y aportar interés a la lectura y al libro como objeto interactivo.
El proceso de trabajo en sí mismo, es para mí una fuente de satisfacción. Me gusta la lectura, me enriquece mucho esa interacción comprometida con el texto, es un ejercicio motivador y estimulante para mí, sobre todo en el caso de la poesía. Pero en general todo género me aporta, me enriquece y retroalimenta mi iconografía personal como artista visual en otros campos de la creación. En el caso de la ilustración infantil, particularmente me divierte muchísimo y aligera mi espíritu, es como un baño de pureza que me da mucho placer.
It is important to research and study, to approach the text to be illustrated with respect and honesty, not to be a passive and linear reader, but a creative reader capable of getting involved and bringing interest to the reading and to the book as an interactive object. The work process itself is a source of satisfaction for me. I like reading, I am enriched by this committed interaction with the text, it is a motivating and stimulating exercise for me, especially in the case of poetry. But in general, every genre contributes to me, enriches me and feeds back my personal iconography as a visual artist in other fields of creation. In the case of children's illustration, I particularly enjoy it a lot and it lightens my spirit, it is like a bath of purity that gives me great pleasure.

Hola me han gustado mucho las ilustraciones que muestra. Sobretodo la relación sincera entre niños y animales. Seguro al público meta que son los niños les ha encantado. Realmente el ilustrador debe ser un lector incansable y buscar los sentimientos detrás de las letras para encontrar la imagen justa. Gracias por compartir.

Así es. Su percepción no está viciada con ningún condicionamiento y viene directo del corazón. En el camino a la adultez perdemos mucho de esa frescura auténtica y espontaneidad, de ahí viene el reto. Me alegra que las ilustraciones sean de su agrado.

Exacto, cada etapa en la infancia tiene sus propias demandas, es un desafío enorme poder estar a la altura de sus expectativas, sobre todo porque a los profesionales que trabajamos para ellos, generacionalmente nos tocó vivir realidades muy diferentes.
