人莫鑒於流水 而鑒於止水 唯止能止眾止 莊子
Men do not look into running water as a mirror but into still water. It is only the still water that can arrest them all, and keep them. (in the contemplation of their real selves). Zhuangzi
Reinterpret the above sentence as Buddhism perspective.
People do not regard flowing water as a mirror but still water as a mirror. Only the state of stillness in mind can stop all dynamic phenomena and being stable as it be.
There is a Chinese expression of clear mirror and still water(明鏡止水). When a person can be still, wisdom arises. Wisdom is regarded as mirror of mind reflected by clear light. So there is saying that meditation is required to achieve enlightenment. However, the meditation is only meaningful when it is possible to stay calm as always. Come rain or come shine
The sky is clear even in the flowing water. And the sound of flows seems to wash away the stains inside my mind.
