Mumbai Indians prevailed over Sunrisers Hyderabad in the Super Over to confirm their place in the playoffs. In an exciting match, Manish Pandey struck a six off the last ball of the last ball to tie the scores and take the match into a Super Over. Manish Pandey and Mohammed Nabi came in to bat for Sunrisers in the Super over but couldn’t quite replicate their feat in the regular overs. While Pandey got run out on the first ball, Bumrah bowled Nabi off the fourth of the over. Sunrisers could only manage 8 runs and with Hardik Pandya hitting Rashid Khan for a six off the very first ball Mumbai Indians easily scored the required runs.

Bucking the trend of bowling first after winning the toss, Mumbai Indians skipper Rohit Sharma chose to bat first. Rohit Sharma got Mumbai Indians to a good start scoring two boundaries off Bhuvaneshwar Kumar in the first over and the three off Khaleel Ahmed in the next. But Ahmed switched to bowling round the wicket and got Sharma (24 from 18) caught at mid-on. Quinton de Kock and Suryakumar Yadav put together a 54 run partnership for the second wicket but just as the two were looking set, Ahmed had Suryakumar Yadav (23 from 17 balls) caught by Rashid Khan at deep cover.
Evin Lewis did not last long falling to Mohammad Nabi for just 1 run. De Kock was on 36 runs from 35 balls when Hardik Pandya joined him at the crease. Bhuvaneshwar Kumar accounted for Hardik Pandya after the all-rounder had scored 18 runs from 10 balls in the sixteenth over leaving Mumbai Indians at 119 for 4 wickets. Pollard got out trying to force the pace when he skied a Khaleel Ahmed ball to square leg. Mumbai Indians were successfully contained to 162 runs after 20 overs by some good tight bowling by Sunrisers even as de Kock remained not out on 69 runs scored from 58 balls.

Martin Guptill, coming into the side in place of Warner, opened the inning with Wriddhiman Saha for Sunrisers. Saha got off the mark with a boundary off the first ball bowled by Barinder Saran. Saha (25 from 15 balls), who was stroking freely, was the first batsman to be dismissed when he was caught smartly by Lewis at point off the last ball of Bumrah’s first over. When Bumrah trapped Martin Guptill in front of the wicket off the first ball of his next, he was on a hat trick. But Kane Williamson safely negotiated the next ball and scored two runs off it. Even as Williamson was given out lbw to Krunal Pandya, Manish Pandey was playing an aggressive knock taking Sunrisers to 80 runs for 3 wickets at the halfway mark.
With the asking rate rising, Vijay Shankar was caught by Pollard as the batsman tried to hit a Krunal Pandya delivery beyond long-on. Sunrisers needed 57 runs in five overs with Pandey not out on 50 runs and Mohammed Nabi having just joined him. Pandey struck two successive fours off Bumrah’s last two balls to reduce the target to 17 runs from the last over. Hardik Pandya conceded 8 runs from the first three balls but got Nabi (31 from 20 balls) out on the fourth. Pandey (71 from 47 balls) then scampered across for two runs and hit the last ball for a six over wide long-on to tie the scores and take the match into the Super Over.

Having confirmed their place in the playoffs, Mumbai Indians will finish in the top two if they win over Kolkata Knight Riders on Sunday. Sunrisers Hyderabad has to win tomorrow’s match against the bottom-placed Royal Challengers Bangalore if they are to feature in the playoffs failing which, Rajasthan Royals playing earlier against Delhi Capitals tomorrow, can take the place if they win.
