SPS Governance Proposal: Allocate 1,000 Rebellion Packs & 1,000 Conclave Arcana Standard Packs for New Player Onboarding Campaign
Summary
This proposal requests SPS DAO approval to allocate 1,000 Rebellion packs and 1,000 Conclave Arcana Standard packs from the DAO treasury for a new player onboarding campaign. The campaign aims to attract and incentivize the first 2,000 verified new players to join the Splinterlands ecosystem by rewarding each with one free Rebellion or Conclave Arcana standard pack upon completing key onboarding steps.
Objective
To grow the Splinterlands player base by leveraging DAO-held Rebellion and Conclave Arcana Standard packs to create a high-impact, low-cost acquisition funnel that attracts and retains legitimate new users.
Campaign Details
Packs Requested: 1,000 Rebellion packs and 1,000 Conclave Arcana Standard packs from the DAO treasury.
Distribution Method: One pack per eligible new player (multi-accounts prohibited).
Eligibility Requirements:
- Create a new Splinterlands account during the campaign period (TBD).
- Additional requirements to be set by the Splinterlands team, focused on maximizing player retention.
Limit: First 2,000 new player accounts that qualify during the campaign.
Timeline: Campaign start and end dates to be determined by the Splinterlands team.
*Any undistributed packs will be returned to the SPS DAO.
Benefits to the DAO
Player Growth: Introduces new players to modern cards, increasing retention potential.
Marketing Momentum: Supports a coordinated marketing campaign with the Splinterlands team.
Long-Term Value: A 5-10% retention rate could yield 100-200 active, verified new players.
Strategic Use of Assets: Establishes a measurable precedent for using DAO-held packs in growth initiatives.
Data Insights: The Splinterlands team will share conversion and tracking data with the community to evaluate campaign effectiveness.
Risks and Mitigation
Risks
- Depletion of DAO-owned Rebellion and Conclave Arcana packs.
- Potential abuse by bots or farmed accounts.
- Setting a precedent for future giveaways.
- Up to 1,000 additional packs of Conclave Arcana and up to 1,000 additional packs for Rebellion will be in circulation.
Mitigation
- Limit the campaign to 2,000 packs with clear eligibility criteria, defined by the Splinterlands team in collaboration with the SPS DAO manager.
- Position this as a pilot campaign with measurable KPIs and no commitment to future pack releases.
- Leverage existing systems to minimize bot and multi-account abuse.
Cost to DAO
Assets Used: 1,000 Rebellion packs and 1,000 Conclave Arcana Standard packs.
Market Value:
- Rebellion Pack: ~$3.87 per pack (Total: ~$3,870 USD equivalent).
- Conclave Arcana Standard Pack: ~$3.26 per pack (Total: ~$3,260 USD equivalent).
Total Campaign Cost: ~$7,130 USD equivalent.
Impact on SPS Treasury: None.
DAO Budget Impact: None (non-SPS asset).
Why Now?
The Splinterlands community and game are thriving, making it an ideal time to attract new players.
An optimized onboarding funnel is in place and continuously improved based on data.
DAO-held assets can incentivize new players to give Splinterlands a fair chance.
2,000 packs (~$7,130) is a modest investment for the potential to gain 200+ active new players.
Closing Thoughts
This campaign is:
Small in scope: Limited to 2,000 packs.
Targeted in execution: Focused on verified new players.
Highly measurable: Provides data to assess effectiveness.
The excitement of opening a pack is a powerful tool for onboarding new players. If successful, this campaign could establish a repeatable growth strategy and a model for using DAO-owned assets to drive player acquisition. Let’s invest in the next generation of Splinterlands players.
We have so many packs in the DAO that we are doing nothing with.
This is a no brainer that could have a high impact on new player retention and will have no impact on pack valuation.
Love the positive attitude. 💪
Happy to vote for this as the team are monitoring the KPI's. We do have a lot of packs in the DAO sat doing nothing. It'll be interesting to see if this works out as a net positive. I expect it will be.
Agreed. It will be a great way to incentive bringing in new players.
Let's go!
Yes, let's!
I'm fine with it as long as it does not get abused by "new" existing players.
Agreed. We will definitely need to keep an eye on this. If anyone abuses it I think that will break the terms of agreement. The team may also implement KYC to recieve the pack.
Love this! Hope we get the see great results from this initiative and that it is the first of many.
Me too! I think the team will give us updates on the data. If it works we can do it again / scale it up. But again, it will definitely be data dependent.
I fully suppor this proposal, but under the cons it should list an additional supply of cards hitting the market
That's a good call Duce. I can have Clay add that in.
Easy yes.
Thank you
KYC should be required and additional safety measures too so that people don't register 20 friends.
I think there is a chance that the team will require KYC to get a pack. We definitely want to limit any multi-accounting.
"Friends"
yeah this was also my first worry
How are you going to prevent current players from creating one or more accounts? You would need a fairly major marketing campaign for "real" new players to join.
I'm seeing multiple brand new accounts with very little power having cards that would cost a fortune to rent. I've a feeling it would encourage it more and you will get SPS churn rather than new money in.
I think likely the team requires KYC to recieve the pack. Also, not sure it's worth breaking the terms to get a $4 pack. Will likely get your account banned, but I won't speak for the team.
Likely? They aren't responding so that's just speculation. I'm not sure people would want to do KYC as it is just data-vacuuming. It's bad enough getting dark notification spam on Hive without the BS of non-anonymous stuff.
There are better ways to getting actual new people on board with zero marketing costs. It just takes creativity.
Creativity could also be creating an engaging and fun foundation and campaign mode to not only teach new players how to play but to hook them. And that pack might be the thing that gets them to play 10 more games...
I refer you back to my first post. Let's pretend that I keep on do that until you understand what it is I'm saying.
Have a great day.
I respectfully disagree with you. I don't think the risk of potentially having your account(s)banned is worth the $4 pack. Again, if the team feels like they can't properly monitor this then maybe KYC is the best solution - I don't know because I don't know what the exact systems are that they have in place. What I am saying is we have the same goals for this but I don't want to limit the team. I trust they will make the best decision to bring in as many new players as possible that will stick.
Verified new players, how exactly? Only kyc can do it
I think it's likely that the team will require KYC to receive the pack, but we will have to see what they decide.
it should be known before giving out the packs from the dao or we are voting blindly...
I don't want to limit the team. If enough people feel strongly about this we can add that in, but right now I want the team to have the flexibility to do what their data is telling them to do to get players to try our game and when to dangle that carrot of a pack with the best chance of them to stick around. It's possible that KYC is too much of barrier for web3 games right now. The point of this is try and see what the results will be on a relatively small amount of packs.
If no kyc is required then there will be no way to identify legit new users with someone else spamming accounts, we are throwing packs in the toilet
I wonder how the team handles this for tournaments, foundation mode, etc... because those aren't KYC.
Would be good if the player is forced to open the pack somehow, the purpose would be to get some playable cards, not to sell the pack unopened.
I hear you, but I think getting the packs and choosing what you do with them is part of the value. Let them hold, open, or sell them on the open market. It’s their reward for accomplishing the task and giving our game a fair try.
I think it will be mostly current people making new accounts no matter what you try to do to stop it.
If it's current people making new accounts they'll be risking their account for a $4 pack. My guess is the team will make it a breach of TOS to do that.
