Help Me Get the Facebook Page Steeming!

in #steem10 years ago (edited)

WHAT KIND OF CONTENT WILL I BE POSTING ON FACEBOOK?

We can't deny how much traffic we can get from Facebook. Yes, we may secretly wish it to go of the dodo bird BUT at this point, we need all the weapons we can get to reach people.

I short I will post the content with the highest likelihood of engagement.

Which brings in an interesting question: what makes content go viral?
What makes people say: "I want to share that!" ?

FROM MY EXPERIENCE, IT'S ALL ABOUT ONE THING: STATUS

People share what they identify with and what they want their peers to identify them with. Would it be UFO, conspiracy theories, politics, demonstration of heroic action(this is #1), funny, witty, cat and dog lovers, etc.

Simply look at the reddit Facebook page and you'll see this in action: https://www.facebook.com/reddit

Also, it's important for Steemit to be as neutral as possible, so I am going to stay away from controversial topics such has politics. Whatever we post, this is what people are going to associate with our brand.

You Can Help Steemit's Facebook Page by...

Posting a lot more content and curate it in the funny and cool tag for example. These topics are non-controversial and very shareable. More shares means more clicks and fans for free.

I will do an effort myself to spend more time under those tags to bootstrap this effort.

CHEERS!

Awesome to see @cryptoctopus :)

And I agree this makes for a good inflection point to start focusing on some more general purpose tags, especially in light of this writeup showing how much things skew toward #steem right now. That's a hump we'll need to get over before we see some major growth.

I posted this Reddit strategy the other day hoping we could start focusing on building up specific topics and then sharing them with the subs on Reddit that makes sense for them. If the ball is already rolling on a FB strategy, I wonder if it would be worth adapting the Reddit strategy and coming up with weekly content buildup sprints that coincide with your FB work. One week focus on #funny, another week on #technology ,etc. As those tags develop activity the process should become less orchestrated over time and can just be curating content from an active tag, but early on I agree we'll want to actively pick our marks and push hard for them.

Yes! If Steemservices focus on twitter, I on Facebook and maybe someone like you do the reddit, we could really get the ball rolling.

Sounds like a plan to me :P

I'm going to be a bit swamped with some work projects I'm rolling out over the next couple weeks but I'll try to keep an eye on what might fit well with Reddit and follow along with your FB adventures to see if we can focus on the same topics and then jump in harder when my head's above water again lol

I would be really cautious with Reddit. I know I keep posting the cautionary story about how several of us promoting BitShares there got shadow banned a year ago or so. But I think the caution is even more relevant now because Steemit is a direct competitor. I'll bet you they won't even take our money for ads pretty soon. You have to find creative ways to promote it there. 'Can I re-post this for you on Steemit to get you a bigger audience?' is good, for example. I'd love to have a signature line on postings there that says something like, 'If you'd posted this on Steemit, you could have made up to $6,000! Wait, you still can!".

Ya this is definitely a concern with Reddit so I'll be treading lightly for sure. To start I won't bother mentioning Steemit at all, I'll just link content from it. I'm not even sure when it would be appropriate to directly call out Steemit given the culture tbh, but a few subs come to mind where you could pull it off without much blowback, and depending on the individual I've found from a past community project that sometimes DMs can work if you have an indication the person would be receptive to what Steemit is working toward given their comment history. At the end of the day, tact makes or breaks Reddit submissions though.

If you haven't read it, Reddit and Sonic Boom put together a report on the culture of Reddit a couple years ago that I was lucky enough to see Victoria and another rep present at NXNE. It has mountains of insight into the culture of the community, and having joined just ahead of the Reddit explosion and lurking for a few months before that their insight tends to match my experiences with the community. They (we :P) absolutely hate brands trying to exploit the community so that will be a concern, but the values that make up the community fit 1:1 with the values Steemit seems to be able to capture so despite the risk of seeming spammy, there's a huge opportunity to grow Steemit's community through Reddit. Its just a matter of finding the people who would feel at home here.

I'm going to try to put together some information about how to approach Reddit soon and I'll post it here for critique/to get other people on board ahead of pushing forward with any Reddit outreach.

I think funny posts will do well... we should also lay off the cryptocurrency stuff, my facebook feed is crowded with it and we should try to reach a different audience than the one we already have here lol
