I quite like the fact that steem is somewhat less volatile and/or erratic than some of the other alt coins. Long term investment and all :) I only joined steemit a few months ago, so was oblivious to what had happened on March 16th and just prior. Interesting info :)
Steem is definitely a great long term hold. Once the site gets a facelift, and the user experience becomes easier, the price of steem could definitely enter a long term bull run.

I think you nail it, the movement of crypto in general seem to more base on speculation and sentiment, not necessarily what is happening with the company associated with it. Another aspect as to do with its support base, Steemit seems to have its faithful that would step in and buy if the prices go below a certain level, the are quite a few silent whales with reputation of 25 that are quite active on the market, you only realize they are around when they give you an upvote and then you look at their wallets, and realize that person just bought a shit load of Steem power. Quite a few folks are optimistic and awaiting to see how things unfold but think we enter a bear market a week after HF19 followed by some negative sentiment coming from some youtubers who weren't happy with the flags they received and encouraged selling. It's been up and down since, haven't really jump out of the words as yet. Probably moving forward, they should explore additional markets to list their coins like Bithumb and have a clear roadmap, this should help spark some fire. I await to see the much needed face-lift and on the back-end the up and down nodes need to sorted out, probably get a dedicated team working on that. Once they get things off the ground, this probably would help with positive sentiment and a lift in price. I used to believe it moved with Bitcoin but clearly that hypothesis is off, but I tell you one thing, those silent Whales are active on the market.

Yeah I think some of those rep 25 whales are new investors but I also think a lot of them are just bigger whales moving funds into a bunch of smaller accounts. I agree also about the additional markets... that would help... I hear Jaxx is prob gonna happen. That would be a nice step towards giving STEEM a life outside of social media.
Thanks for the history! As a minnow, I am fairly new to steemit and cyypto, so this helps put things in perspective. If I had the money to invest, I'd put al bets on steem! Just an intuitive feeling.
i never realized there were so many hardforks... honestly i understand very little, but thanks for the perspective. yeah, it sounds like the cumulative effect of people throwing money at diff. coins. esteem and new communities are cool... i didn't know new people were being hired, i'd like to see a post about that. ty

Do you think making the steem power power down go from 2 years to 13 weeks cause a short term drop in steem? My thinking was this provides an opportunity for whales to flood the market with steem. I personally doubt it's factored into the price at all. Eventually it will though if adoption continues!

Yeah it definitely did cause a short term dip (jan-march) as the whales who no longer believed in Steemit were able to exit their positions quickly.
