Why do you think the process is convoluted/complicated?
Send BTC to Bittrex or Binance and buy Steem, send to your account, done.
Or if you want the fastest way, buy BTC and send it to blocktrades which will transfer the amount of Steem you can buy with your BTC directly to your Steem account.
It's that easy.

I remember last summer being told I had to use gift cards to buy material goods for foreigners in exchange for crypto to be converted into Steem, or something to that effect, since it is "illegal" or something to buy it directly with cash. Still, it would require me to have near constant internet access, which is something I can't afford to do at the moment, or I would be doing more than one Steem post a day and chatting with folks a lot more.
