Waiting for superman to fix STEEM

in #steem6 years ago (edited)
I might anger one or two folks with this post, but in truth, my intention is not to create enemies, but to bring some thoughts into consideration. I'm not trying to dismiss some of the issues we have with the platform, how the system of incentives is not ideal, etc, I think to anyone who practices honesty these are very apparent. But, are we falling for the whole "having a cake and eating it too" cognitive inconsistency?

OMG everyone is powering down

Yes, it's seems to be true. There are many accounts who are currently selling their STEEM Tokens. Should this worry you? Well, I guess if you are thinking short term, then yes. Because this means that the current price of STEEM is not about to turn around. However, the important distinction "short term".

The way I see it, is that those who are selling at the moment, those who are powering down, leaving the platform because "it's not worth it" are probably doing the right thing for the platforms health in the long term. In other words, there is a big chance these accounts were consistently selling all their earnings, never building any kind of influence, never compounding their social entrepreneurship capabilities anyways. So, as much as I may sound like a jerk, maybe it's good that someone with a "Taker" mentality is leaving the blockchain.

I'm careful as to make a generalization because I'm sure there are reason, and reasons. Some people might have some medical emergencies, financial troubles and what have you. So, for them, it's the only reasonable choice. However, some of the people who complain the most, are in my book just acting entitled.

I have the current attitude, maybe to my own detriment mind you. "Oh, you don't want the tokens... I'll take em" If they think this is not worth it, that's fine, I want those tokens. I'll try to build something with them.

OMG the system is broken

I agree, I completely agree that it is. The system of incentives is not working as it intended, and the distribution of tokens is not really happening as it should. However, what are we doing to fix it? What are you doing? - Here is the part were I must put a mirror in front of your face and ask you.

Are you part of the problem? Maybe not actively, maybe you are not "circle jerking" as they call it, or abusing bidbots using spam or anything that blatant. But, are you part of the problem too.

Are you selling every single token you make? Are you supporting anyone? Are you engaging in productive conversations? Are you attempting to change the culture of the platform? Are you teaching people in your way to be balanced? Are you flagging when someone is being abusive or offensive? Or are you just sitting on the sidelines waiting for superman to show up?

OMG... Where is superman?

My point is that he is not coming, he doesn't exist. You know, as much as I would love it if the day of tomorrow something magical would happen, it's not likely to. What are the chances that @dan is going to come back and "fix it" and honestly what if his idea of "fixing it" is also not the right one?

Let's be honest about some things that are actually verifiable:

  • the trending page was never grandiose
  • early adopters made more steem simply because of math, not because of content
  • many people are holding unrealistic expectations (not everyone here is due to win a pulitzer)

If we can depart from those three points, maybe we can have a healthy conversation as to how to move forward. How to create a better system of incentives, how to attract investment, etc. But, if we keep on holding on to romantic ideas of the past, we simply won't, we simply can't.

The Energy Spent

This is the point I'm hoping to convey. Where are you spending your energy, your time? - Listen, you don't have to answer me, I'm not important in your life, not really. I'm simply saying that every single one of us should be asking this very question before we rage quit, come back, quit again, write salty articles on medium, come back, etc.

Not to be mean, but these are exercises in futility. Maybe I'm getting too old, maybe I'm losing a tiny percentage of my sympathy or I'm suffering from sympathetic exhaustion if there is even such a thing. But, I can't help but to not feel bad for those who all they do is whine.

Am I turning evil?

I guess it is expected for the system to not be perfect because what Steem is doing is probably something unprecedented right?

I mean, how many other social media sites have used blockchain technology to reward its users? While also having tons of projects that reward specific types of content?

All of this is new and there are certainly flaws in here, but the idea is very powerful, and hopefully it can become the new normal for content creation all over the internet.

Regarding the power downs, well, there are still people powering up a lot. I have most of my steem earnings powered up as in the case with a lot other steemians.

I think that left because of the low prices will probably have a hard time coming back when the prices recover, it is like saying "oh hi people now that the bull market is in full run I am here again to get my daily doses of steem"... it would look kind of bad.

Another positive aspect of remaining active is that we don't lose the habit of daily writing once it is created, it can be hard at the beginning to write articles on a daily basis, but one can get use to it if we simply keep going and going, but if we stop, starting again a few months down the road can be very difficult I think.

You know, that you mention it, that is probably very accurate... I'm in the habit of reading and writing daily and no matter the $$ that come or don't, that habit is probably healthy.

I for one, I'm not worried about power downs in the slightest... to me, this whole thing smells like opportunity.

Steem price is down because ALL crypto market is down... There is no more real reason than that... Whenever we see an altseason coming again steem will raise and everybody will be happy...

It does hurts to get our value down, but still there is no other platform like this...

I would still making music and cover videos for free, so there is no real difference if steem goes down, i am doing here something i like to do...

that's 100% the truth my friend... I uploaded songs and philosophy for 15 years without making a dime... I'm not stopping because the market is down.

Hi meno or meano lol. No you are quite correct and if you are not active in the community then you are of no use.

Oh, you just gave me a great idea... maybe I should make a MeanO signature for the little rants... hahahah

Headline should be A rant with MeanO.

oh, i like it!!

I'll take the tokens too, thank you very much.

Haha I notice you like to preface a lot with "I realize this might make some people angry, but..." I'm with you 100% though. Let's build something great on top of those that are leaving. As long as you and other folks on enjoying have not left and more of us like minded thinkers are positive on what we want to build here, I'm freaking staying. I'm not a builder myself but I will support the builders as much as I can.

Couching the caveats or caveating the couches... People don't like mirrors Eon... so you must coat the psychological warfare with stealthy sweets.

Ninjitsu quote of the day.

Positive changes are not guaranteed in the slightest so I would encourage anyone that does not enjoy the platform in it's current state to power down and move on. If you enjoy the platform in it's current state, but also want to see improvements find a way to be a part of the solution.

I always feel somewhat useless in situations like this because I'm not a developer and have zero knowledge about writing code. Therefore I must find other ways to contribute to those solutions that will push Steemit forward.

If you have any suggestions for us non tech folks @meno I'm all ears lol.

helping the growth of a community or growing a community yourself... those are valuation machines, and they are the best, because they are balanced.

Great thoughts! I'd like to buy Steems if had how to... Confidence and self-confidence are two parts of success.

We need a better distribution and we need stakeholders that are willing to invest in the platform. IMO.

Yes, we have flaws, but as you point out we also need to set better expectations. I know people who mine for a few shit tokens a day. Not for their value today, but their value later.

Those who are powering down ARE good for the platform. Hopefully, they drive the price low, so those who are engaged and interested in the platform can buy in more and improve their influence.

Steem isn't for everyone and for those who find it isn't for them... I wish them well. I get frustrated sometimes, but it is a toddler platform.

Love the article, love the thoughts... Nobody is coming to save us, and if you can't handle it the way it is! Sell, please for the love of all things good, sell. :)

You might be brushing off on me Whatsup! hahahhaha but I mean that as a compliment

This is exactly what I'm hoping for.

You say that but I want free money for doing nothing....and a lot of it...I mean A LOTTTT

I'm agreeing with you completely.

Just one little side-note:

Powering down does not equal to selling. Powering down can also mean to have liquidity for SMTs or to trade for SBD.

I think most are just following along . Ned, Johal, Meerkat did it and now some others are powering down as well..

We have a saying in Croatia:
"Kud svi Turci, tu i mali Mujo."

"most are just following along" 😂

king-penguin-1154432_1920.jpg

I'm sure many are doing just that... selling right now, waiting for others to dump, rebuy lower and get more tokens. Risky move, but, I'm sure there are some peeps doing it.

I think if profit for a person is the only focus here then you would get bored pretty fast...

Get your message out there and develop your following. This is the time to do it.

Correct my friend... Btw, im so glad i found your Plexus video... I've been meaning to say thank you.

I am trying to redistribute wealth to quality with my 1UP project. But other than that I think we overestimate what is possible in one year and underestimate what is possible in several years.

Just because the current distribution of Steem is bizarre that doesn't mean that the system is broken. I would say the system in ingenious but Steemit (other than Steem) sucks. Much of the value I see here is coming from the blockchain. This is a money printing machine and we can improve it anyway we want when the SMT train gets started. We just opt-out into our own economies and make sure the distrubution is better then with Steem.

And over time Steem is distributing from top to bottom anyway as we can already see with the available data.

The focus of the @helpie project today is educating people to see things this way. Yes, everyone who wants to learn should have to tools to learn the ecosystem and blockchain technology. But, the mindset is ten times more important than the specifics.

A lot of people show up with high expectations for how much love they are going to get when they post all of the content that made them the star of their own little Facebook show. When they come to Steemit and a "thumbs up" has a pricetag associated with it they discover that it is a lot harder to earn them.

One of the things that I think would help is having more people use tiny upvotes just to show appreciation. I'm talking about upvotes that cost next to zero SP, but still register as a "like."

There is a service called @dustsweeper that will turn all of those little dust votes into a little payout, so it isn't wasted SP. You just send them a little SBD and they will add a little vote on top of any dust votes that you get so that they will always be above the payout threshold.

@meno Very good post :D Best wishes to you.

Like the "reality check" content here @meano. Whoopsie! I mean @meno ... 😊

"early adopters made more steem simply because of math, not because of content"

Yep. Has to be some hard truth there. Buying SP when it cost $0.01 vs. now when it cost $1.00 vs. (hopefully) the future when it costs $10.00 ... An opportunity here for great coders / developers like @Steemchiller ...

"many people are holding unrealistic expectations (not everyone here is due to win a pulitzer)"

What!? 🤔😞 A real bubble buster there @meano / meno! 😉

Seriously, hopefully all who contribute value to our Steem blockchain can be content / peace with doing what they can and not be too distressed about it from there.

As always, thanks for thought-provoking content @meno

@dan is never coming back, he is to busy with EOS, i read reddit daily and dan is always in the EOs telegram chat fixing eos issues and giving ideas...

Imo we only got ned and i would love to see more transparency from him... he is powering down but why? where is he now? What kind of investors is he bringing to the SMT? All of these questions should be answered from him... yes it might not make the price increase, but at least it would assure us of the road going forward!

I'm powering up and will keep powering up! Might drop a few bucks on STEEM next month :)

We already know why he powers down. He has friends that is starting a Crypto fund. So he is investing in that. It was on his Twitter

Can you send a print screen of the time he said that? I went to his twitter and didn't find anything where he relates powering down to crypto fund, he mentioned crypto fund but didn't say he was powering down because of it...

But of course it's because of that. No need to have 4 million STEEM. So sell off makes sense

The way you said it i was thinking you were 100% sure, so you just read between the lines... We can never know for certain unless he says it! Even Bitconnect didn't go down in 1 day, there were some people that bought even when the price was low... I'm just saying, i like to play it more on the safe side then to speculate on what is happening, even though i did speculate in a post about the reason he is powering down

Im going to buy more STEEM though

January: "There are so many loud voices here. How will I ever be heard?"
July: "Gee it's quiet in here, guess I'll do something else".
December: "There are so many loud voices here. How will I ever be heard?"

do you remember that funny video... Don't buy bitcoin, it's gonna crash?

I've seen a few of those in my time. Not sure which one you mean. I like bitcoinobituaries.com
That's always fun. Ironically I think bitcoin's time is over, but I don't know how long it'll be for sentiment to catch up with reality.

this one! hahahha

HAHAHA I'm dead

Love it. I hadn't seen it before.

Imma sue him...he did not say

: NOT FINANCIAL ADVICE

Irresponsible Commie bastard this dude, trying to shove his socialism down our throats and put us in camps feeding us chemicals.

Can you believe his video?

Just going to echo what @dreamrafa stated...everything is down and what that happens...the end is coming!!!

when things have a bump...we’ve all been steem fans forever lol

this post gave me some great food for thought. especially if we can all agree not everyone will win a pulitzer.

if we accept that lol maybe we can move forward and reward real conversations and real engagement?

hahahhaah so true... steem up 80% everyone is like...

Man, steem is the future....

Steem down 80%

POS coin.. does not work...

Everything has its flaws and Steem is no exception but for the moment, for its kind, is the best we can have. I admit that I had too high expectations regarding my earnings around here and probably that was the problem. Now I don't even care that much anymore. It is whait it is and that's it. I write about whatever find interesting and wahtever comes in upvotes is good enough. Who knows maybe in time some whale will set me uo on Steem auto. Until then I'm happy with what I have and my interactions around here.

excellent attitude brother...

Not to be mean, but these are exercises in futility

look at you ...as soon you became dolphin ... you talking the highfalutin talk...

is that a representation of the curation reward system ? seems quite close...

I am a newbie. I just want to follow tags!!!!
