I'm in the process of trying to read Flash Boys by Michael Lewis. It is a non-fiction account of how several major brokerage firms were able to gain a sizable advantage over their competitors by utilizing faster bandwidth and other methods to ensure an advantage to insiders.

It was recommended to me by a friend and I was fascinated by how the adoption of emerging technologies were able to give someone an edge. It is also very indicative of how established, regulated financial institutions use whatever means necessary to profit off of the average joes out in the world.

I don't know the book, but I had heard of this idea. That just shaving milliseconds off transaction times could result in huge gains if you could beat the competing bids.

Unfortunately, it is a sad example of how profit drives our society...
