What Do You Think Is The Average IQ Of Steemians?

in #steemians5 years ago (edited)

I have found the current Steem user base to have a significantly higher average IQ than internet users as a whole. That is one of the biggest attractions of this place. I have found that when I'm engaging a Steemian in a debate that person is very likely to be capable of holding their end of a debate and keeping in mind what the issues and their intricacies and complexities are without veering off into nonsense or emotional outbursts. I have debated issues with people here and we may not always have come to an agreement but I've nearly always had a sense of communicating with an intelligent person. Compared to what's out there on the rest of the internet that's breath of fresh air. Another trait notably different from the general population among Steemians is openness (Big Five reference here) but that's nor here or there, although an interesting topic of its own.

The above is a normal distribution. The raw scores of an IQ test are normalized so that each test score corresponds to a score (average 100, standard deviation 15) that could also be expressed as a number that tells how many standard deviations the score deviates from average. (Standard deviation means how much the scores differ from each other on average.) On the horizontal axis are the IQ scores and on the vertical axis are the number of people who get each score relative to the whole test population.

What do you think the average IQ of current Steemians is? Please state your answer in the comments.

My guesstimate is that the average Steemian is between 110 and 115 at the moment. It was at its all-time peak (including the future) right when Steem was launched because all the people involved were geeks. It's been dropping slowly since then but not monotonously. Bull runs have a way of bringing more simple folks on board, which is a great thing because that's a direct consequence of going mainstream. Only the next bull market will provide an answer to the question whether or not it was a wise thing to stick around through the bear market of 2018 but that year had the effect of weeding out the non-hackers who do not pack the gear to stomach the (temporary?) loss of massive fiat value.

I think the average steemian is knowledgeable enough. To navigate through this ecosystem you need to know a handful of things. Many run away from this blockchain because of its complexities. Owning a social media account that's not just for social purposes but also can be used for crypto transactions isn't something most people are used to. When I first started I had no idea and was frustrated with the amount of data I needed to consume but it got easier with time.
I sound really smart talking about cryptocurrency and steem to my friends. It's just a new field they've never explored and it also feels great talking to them about it, although most never take the bold step of trying it out.

Range: 100 - 115

Hmm, does IQ make someone a good debater? It's really just a measure of logic and some of the biggest IQs are on the autism spectrum. We all know how easily high end autistics melt down if you disagree with their logic.

I may or may not write a post about this topic later but I'll answer that briefly.

Hmm, does IQ make someone a good debater?

Practically no single thing makes anyone good at anything. But whatever IQ measures is a major component in what makes one good at debating.

It's really just a measure of logic and some of the biggest IQs are on the autism spectrum. We all know how easily high end autistics melt down if you disagree with their logic.

Do you seriously consider that a valid argument against the claim that the average IQ of the participants is a major factor determining the quality of debate on an online platform? Are you suggesting that grasp of logic has no bearing on how good somebody is at crafting valid arguments?

I'm suggesting that IQ is no measure on its own and that was an example. Seeing as you concede here that no one thing alone makes anyone a good anything, I'm surprised you didn't see that.

I'm not much good at debating. I merely put thoughts forward. I don't think quickly and it takes me a while to mull thoughts over. I'm easily disarmed by an argument and it can take me a few hours to realise if it's not even valid. I actually find it easier to debate on here, due to being able to come back some time later with a formed response. Face to face I have no hope. I hate confrontation. Yet my IQ comes in that 0.1% section in tests (or used to at least ;D). Logic has one answer, debates don't necessarily. In fact, a good debater can probably win a debate on something which isn't logical.

I believe it needs a certain amount of emotional intelligence (do they call that EQ?) to be able to debate without resorting to emotional outbursts. Does emotional intelligence come with IQ? Maybe.

IQ does not mean anything. What does is the way you act and do things!

Not quite, historically it's been a measure of how your brain performs relative to your age group. How many push-ups or sit-ups you can do mentally, if you will.

What this means in a social context is another matter.

It was first developed for identifying those children whose learning disabilities were caused by deficiencies in cognitive development.

IQ works surprisingly well as a group-level predictor of outcomes across a lot of domains.
