I agree with your important notes there. I'm a YouTuber and a comparison could be made to people who want Sub for Sub or Like for Like. It will not increase watch time, it will not help the overall stats your your channel to get more noticed. Engagement is crucial, even vital. The human interaction is an important one and thus, groups where we need to interact, check out content is cool. It allows us to discover and connect with others and for them to do the same with us. Such rules are fun rules.
