Asking for Upvotes is Like Sending an Unsolicited Dick Pic

I don't know if it's a generational thing or if it's a "Hey, I'm new to the internet!" kind of thing, but good lord. You'd think an upvote on a post was about to change someone's life the way people ask for them like penicillin after a night spent with a prostitute.

Rather than trolling people's comments with mindless requests, why don't you try to interact with the post? Why don't you interact with the actual person posting?

Better yet: go create content people want to read. I promise that's the best way to get people to upvote your stuff.

Asking me to upvote your content or follow you because you've followed me doesn't endear me to doing either action. It tells me you're lazy and can't be bothered to actually put in the work required to build a following. Steemit is just like many other social media platforms in that, sure, you can be as fake as you'd like...but if you're not producing things people want to read or see, then nobody's gonna care.

Step up your game. Spend more than two seconds copy/pasting the same comment on thousands of articles.

This also annoys me on things like youtube where upvotes are worthless.. also people posting FIRST and "for any upvote football team X will score a goal", "like if you love whatever youtube channel we're on" etc.

I never understood that and neither do i understand how those post actually get hundreds of sheep to vote for them (on youtube, i guess that's not happening so much here).

YES. so much yes. that shit is unbelievable!

ive had an idea to make beggar app, where people could click the button, and some 3 sentences phrase would come out. like:

  • Wow, i was just thinking of this. But no way i could write it with such a style. You are very talented, im happy to be one of your followers. Can you follow me back, so you can give me some feedback on my progress?
  • This picture has feelings. Its amazing how you are able to see the things from such unique perspective. I am trying to achieve that, but somehow its hard to get any close to this level. I am browsing through my archive and crying. Keep inspiring me, please! Please upvote and follow me, i need all the support.

all we need is some... 100 of these comments, and whole place would look more

hygienic. i guess.

make it 1,000 unique responses and i, weirdly, don't hate this idea.

must admit it would look nicer. i already came out with ass kissing app idea, but noone like it. guess its concept is too realistic.

i mean, that also sounds a little messy.

but i like where your head's at.

When I get those comments, I reply with a question about my post. Sometimes they even admit they have no clue.

Makes me think of the whole "Subscribe to me and I'll subscribe back!" when trying to grow a channel. Unsurprisingly these posts are HUGE on the videos about How to Grow Your Youtube Channel. Really, the only one making any substantial growth is the video creator!

As the saying goes.... the only one getting rich during a gold rush is the one selling the picks and shovels!

very true, but that method is, personally, short-sighted. if you're still holdin onto a warehouse full of picks and shovels when the gold runs out, you better be smart enough to know how to get rid of them in other ways.

HAHA! I just came across a Memo where someone sent a Whale .001 Steem asking for an upvote saying "It won't cost you anything"!!! lol

It also looks pretty desperate..especially when they are asking for upvotes and follows from a minnow with a 6 cent full vote (and half the times I only squeeze 2 or 3 cents out of it).. lol

seriously. and the irony here...so much irony.

You have a point with this post. Not sure I agree with the "dick pic" part, though. The way I see it, if anything, people begging for votes are more like "crabs". (And not the seafood kind)

crabs, dick pics...i think most people aren't really up for receiving either when given the choice, honestly. :P

Hey baby an other night I will be in the mood
Now just do it
Upvote me

stop your getting fresh with me, sailor. i'm a lady!

OkOk I just tried

i am also new here Nice Post. I need some followers, i will follow you in return please follow me @Rozeeroti

Are you kidding?

Lol that is hilarious. Commenting that on a story about begging. I am pretty sure he was not joking either.

He didn't even show us his dick.

Yeah he could have at least given us all laugh.

It ain't going to suck itself

i'm not even a little surprised by its appearance, honestly.

point: proven.

It is as if people have just given up and just need the easy option with everything. Anything that is worth doing takes a lot of time and investment, they don't see that they just need shit now.

i've been a broke writer for 23 years. my patience is pretty fucking infinite at this point. i don't understand the need for instant gratification of everything under the sun.

They have never had to earn anything for themselves, everything has just been given to them. So they think it should be the same here too.

very true words @bucho, it is important to interact with the people in steemit, and to comment on the posts that we like, I am new on steemit, but I agree it is important to write about things that can help others and they will be interested in reading, thank you for the advice, I will be sharing more things here in steemit!! I like to meet new people and to help them improve their eating habits with nutrtious food and advice that I learned from the Trophology sciencie.

Welcome to Steem @bucho I have upvoted and sent you a tip

Hello Bucho! Glad to see more people like you - here joining steemit! Becoming a steamian is a great adventure! Here you can win money while bloging! At the beginning it wouldn't be easy, but it isn't impossible. So just write from your heart and everything will be allright. Wish you much luck! Greetings, @khunpoom!

Welcome, and nice introduction. Looking forward to reading your stuff.

This shit's been going on since the ancient days of Myspace and now on Reddit and Facebook, and those upvotes are worthless.

good point. i remember myspace very, very well, unfortunately. i think it really jumped the shark once they started allowing people to put so many graphics on their profile that it took 30 minutes just to load up a single page.

Yup, It's a shame. They really got social media right the first time and then screwed it up.

Marvelous article, I couldn't refrain and I did resteem it :-)

I am thinking of writing a script which will identify the comments with sentences like "I have followed you please follow me", "I have upvoted your post, please upvote mine" and flag them automatically. If more people downvote such comments and unfollow such people I think over the time that practice will go down.

...but please! I beg you! You must! I followed you and upvoted! It's bad karma not to return the favour!

It's like those annoying chains that went around on Fb. Do the following bs, then send it to 10 of your friends and if not you will go to hell. Waste of time for everyone involved. Good post!

wait. hold up. you're telling me those DON'T work?

dammit. i've been hornswaggled.

hornswaggled :D

I have never heard /seen this word before! It's awesome! This is definitely going into my dictionary! So yes, you certainly have been HORNSWAGGLED!

It seems to largely be a result of people not understanding how the platform works. Which, not excusing the behavior, it's not exactly the easiest thing to get the hang of. Thanks for your no b.s. post, though.

that's a perfectly valid point. i guess i've spent so much time on message boards back in the day i don't even think about how the uninitiated might view all this. not that i completely understand it myself. hell, i've only been on it about a week or two.

You seem like a smart guy- any idea why my internet works so much worse when I have a weak signal and it's on my body?

have you tried turning your body off and then back on? sometimes this requires a second person to be effective. or a visit to YouPorn.

Guess I should have mentioned the laptop
homercomputerdoh.jpg

wait, is this a serious post? because i honestly have no idea if that's the case.

i can do sarcasm and word play all fucking night, however.

and really, you should know better.

laptops have feelings too. NEVER leave them out.

But.....but....i thought women liked random dicks in their inbox.

My life has been shattered.

On other's posts, I totally agree, but a polite reminder at the end of your own post is another matter and well within protocol, it even helps some.

VERY different animal for sure. i don't disagree if it's in your own posted story.

Profound.

Yeah the thing is that it is not really working.
It is good just to try to make a content that you want to share within the bounds of social media and forum ethical standards as not to annoy anyone and make the community clean and productive. @bucho

nice introuction. Followed. Follow me back 😘

Totally, serious red flag. If I ever commented on somebody's post just mentioning that concept even slightly sideways just to get a meaningless interaction, it would feel disgusting. Hence, like your title description exactly.

Hmm,...... @bucho realistic,.....

Upvoted @bucho nice post @shahzaibniaxi from facebook gruop

Hello, your post I invite you to meet me and give me a vote, thanks a hug Giant from Bogota Colombia @ferchomusic

Welcome and Thank You for being with us!! Following your Blog now

Here's the type of response I have used a time or two:

I think it's great that you are excited about engaging in Steemit. And I think it's great to experiment with ways to market yourself and your posts. However, I believe the best way would be to write engaging posts, chiming in on people's blogs, commenting, upvoting and resteeming, earning yourself a reputation and a reason for others to follow you. I get many requests every day from new users to upvote and follow them. I use my voting power on those who have something of great benefit to share. If you are one of those people, I will be glad to exchange with you, but feel there is no real value in just swapping upvotes. Many blessings on your path to a powerful Steemit experience. I hope to find your posts a great contribution.
