How Many Unique Daily Active Users We Have?

in #steemit5 years ago (edited)

A couple of days ago i read an interesting post from @mindtrap stating how easy it is to buy over 50% of the steem that's on the exchanges, if all of us spent just under 5$. I suggest you go read and it by just clicking HERE.

Reading further to his post this phrase caught my attention!

At the moment of writing there are only 1.322.972 unique accounts registered.

Now you may wonder why is that so. I remembered writing a post, i think around 10 months ago that had both 2 parts and 2 different goals. The first one is to try and understand how many are actually the unique daily active users and the second one is to see how many will reply to my post either by just watching it randomly or if i was tagging them. (I think it proved successful). You can find it here

Anyway again the same question popped into my head. How many daily active users are actually in here based on the fact that we have over 1 million unique accounts registered?

Step 1: Finding Statistics

Before i mention my usual source for stats that i trust since joined the platform, i once again stumbled across another post yesterday. This post is from @whatsup (CLICK HERE FOR THE POST) in which with the use of some graphs he compares the the numbers of Whales, Orcas, Dolphins, Minnows with that of 11 months ago in order to highlight the progress.

So now i got 2 different sources for stats. Let's begin with the one @whatsup used!

@arcange

That's the number of people in here in many categories divided by their SP. We can also see the inactive ones in the grey area.

Now i will also add the other stats from @penguinpablo because i can see some relation

Date              Accounts transacting
2019-09-26     38,442
2019-09-25     36,122
2019-09-24     37,140
2019-09-23     37,222
2019-09-22     35,672
2019-09-21     36,193
2019-09-20    36,428
2019-09-19    39,379

STEP 2: Diving Deeper

So let's say that in a day we have an average of 35k accounts transacting. Now what transacting actually means is another very relevant question. We can safely assume that it's the accounts that in a day make at least an upvote, a comment or a post. We can also assume that it may go even further like sending some steem, buying some, redeem some rewards or playing a steem based game.

Now out of those 35k i will once again assume that 15k are bots or alt accounts and i will exclude them, so we now got down to 2ok. (Most likely there are more bot or alt accounts). Now i will do something i wanted to do so for a long time! I WILL QUOTE MYSELF FROM 10 MONTHS AGO!

A lot of people use autovoting services that i am not against but it still mislead us in a way. If you have no free time or you follow too many people then it's more than ok to use autovoting services, it's a must! That way you can reward the people you love or at least find interesting
The problem though is that by doing this the account counts as a daily active user even if you are at a cabin in the woods without any internet connection. Also, many people don't bother to do any manual research at all, maybe cause they are bored, maybe cause they don't have the time, maybe because they do everything automatically?

So because i am good with assumptions (or at least that's what my dog says) i will say that out of those 20k accounts 10-15k are actually inactive because of using somekind of auto service. In other words the unique daily active accounts are somewhere between 5k-10k

BUT WAIT THERE IS MORE

I remembered having bookmarked a useful site about dapps. If you quickly click here  https://www.stateofthedapps.com/dapps/steemit you will see that according to this the daily active users are just 2.5k. Their definition of active users is this below:

unique source addresses in transactions to DApp contracts)

Step 3: More Assumptions & Conclusion

As you can see there is a small difference between the numbers from the site and those from my assumptions. We got 2.5k over 5-10k. There is one thing i can't understand though and maybe if i will then these numbers can come to agreement terms.

Does those 2.5k are only for accounts using the steemit interface? Because nowadays we got many different interfaces especially after the hf21, so if it doesn't count them, then the number is obviously bigger. If that's the case then my assumption is maybe more realistic than it seems to be. Or maybe i am completely wrong too and the number is far greater (which i highly doubt).

How many you guys think are the actual unique daily active users?

Comment raid!
I'm still reading the main post here but wanted to make sure I drop a comment first haha...

It's probably in the ~10k ballpark.

It's critical to remember that steemit is not steem.

Blogging isn't steem.

People using apps like splinterlands or nextcolony that are just posting JSONs to the blockchain are just as important (maybe more important) as random commentator or poster.

yep that's maybe the case! The more the better :P

Hi @filotasriza3 - I'm just here to say hi! Thanks for sharing your thoughts on our active users - I think I've heard '14000' a day as an average, but I must be honest I don't know if that means they comment/upvote or maybe just do a wallet transaction or... I'm one of those people that doesn't really get too deep into numbers :-) I measure Steem's worth by the amount of engagement I see on posts, so that's another reason to come say 'hi' here.

Leaving at least 5-10 comments a day is a great way to grow this place and make some connections!

Cheers :-)

hi @soyrosa thanks for stopping by! I really like how you measure steem's worth! Engagement is the key and i try to most of the posts i upvote to give a thoughtful or a funny comment as well. (not the thanks mister, follow for follow kind sir :P)

Also i think except the money aspect of which i think everyone wants to see some value in their posts, good comments is the thing that push us forward and motivate us, especially now with lose prices. When an author invest his/her time posting something i believe he/she would like for someone to read it and share his/her view!

Hard to say what truly counts as unique in those metrics. Btw... You meant 2.5k I assume. It's possible they only look at app metadata in which case it is pretty split now in terms of where content is posted.

yep 2.5 i edited! thanks for spotting it out!

I wonder if at least steemit.inc knows the actual number :P

In other words the unique daily active accounts are somewhere between 5000k-10k

Quite a typo there, you mean 5k-10k!

true true and edited! :P thanks for spotting it out!

We are here to raid you post and say hi.

Many good Steemians have a hard time finding each other...

We were in discord talking about this and decided to come and raid your post

ohh god now i feel violated :P

Thanks for the sudden raid, i wasn't prepared, i should have made something to eat :P

I should also join these raids!

Each one of us is a unique snowflake.

i identify as 2 unique snowflakes

change my mind! :P

There's at least one unique daily active user, me :)

and me. so minimum unique two :))

add me and we have at least 3

hahaha then instead of this post i should just asked "who is a daily user" and count :P

There are precisely 14 active unique users. I know this because a lady in the woods told me

but she told me 5k.......... hmm maybe we both got scammed :P
