Steemit Improvements: Search Functionality - Google Ad revenue distributed or not?

in #steemit8 years ago (edited)

Google custom search just does not cut-it for a content rich platform like Steemit.

First of all, when browsing the Search page, the Top Navigation bar is missing, which does not allow for easy flow of the website.

Secondly Google search, although one of the best search engines online, is the primary search engine for Steemit, considering the amount of content produced on Steemit daily, this should be a focus point for developers on platform improvements, to develop a SteemSearch engine.

A couple of initial improvements;

  • Clean-up search page navigation issues
  • Include a sidebar on the search page, for each category search
  • Get rid of the Google Ads, no use advertising 3rd party services

Content and Search operate hand-in-hand, i would like to see some major improvements in this regard for the platform, keeping in-mind SEO benefits too.

Question: Google Ad revenue generated by the Steemit platform on users content, does Steemit keep all the Ad revenue or is this distributed back to the community?

Sort:

There is a project called SteemShovel for searching. See the blog https://steemit.com/@kaptainkrayola

Thanks for this insight, i must say i am getting lost with all these 3rd party services being created, i would still like to see the Steemit default platform incorporate a better search.

Yes, there really are a lot of them! I've contributed quite a few haha. At least there is a centralized place that lists them all in case you may not be aware. It is SteemTools.com by @roelandp, also linked in the right handed menu on Steemit as Steem App Center

Where do I find logins and numbers of active people per week and per day? please ?

I'm not at all worried what's happening with the ad revenue. Steemit.com is a company, after all. Maybe it's uh, paying people or, who'd have thunk-- the actual business model (though I kinda doubt that)

Yeah - i would like to see this Ad revenue pushed back into community initiatives and/or marketing - make this data visible to Steemit users would be beneficial too. Again, major search improvements are required.

Elastic would bring them, but first I'd have to get it working properly. I hope that there are Steemit.com team members who may be able to lend a hand with this one, I'm concerned that everything after making the search function may be out of my depth. We shall see.

I have ElasticSearch running steemshovel.com and it works pretty well. Check it out, let me know what you think.

But I will reiterate my offer to host elasticsearch.

Tell us more about elasticsearch?

URL to it in the next hour. I do not know how to integrate it, but I will leave all the doors open and post the passwords here.

It is a web service built for searching big datasets like this one, fast. I may also try cayley, a graph database.

How about using a search engine that is open source.

Great idea

There is ONLY open source infrastructure software

There's an elasticsearch cluster. Please play with it to your heart's content. Please get others to play with it, and with the rancher docker container platform running it. Thank you.

Hi Faddat, it looks very technical, great interface.
