King’s most prominent run-in with plagiarism took place in 1955. In support of his doctorate at Boston University, King turned in a dissertation entitled, “A Comparison of the Conceptions of God in the Thinking of Paul Tillich and Henry Nelson Wieman.” He was able to successfully defend his dissertation and went on to receive his degree.

In 1955 Johnny Cash recorded the song “Folsom Prison Blues”, the tale of a convicted murder being tortured by the sound of a passing train while stuck in prison. It was released that year and rereleased again in 1968 after he performed the song at Folsom Prison. However, Cash had lifted the melody and much of the lyrics from a 1953 song “Crescent City Blues” by Gordon Jenkins, about a narrator hoping to get out of a small midwest town. Though Cash had changed the song fairly drastically, turning it into a piece about regret and imprisonment, the similarities were still more than glaring.

In 1922 Eliot published the popular poem The Waste Land. Decades later it was discovered that the poem was largely a hodgepodge of text from lesser-known poets, one of them named Madison Casein and his poem entitled Waste Land. Well before the publication of The Waste Land, Eliot had already made no secret about his appropriation. In 1920 he published an essay that famously said, “Immature poets imitate, mature poets steal; bad poets deface what they take, and good poets make it into something better, or at least something different.”

Sometimes plagiarism is a good thing - essentially when the message is important but the originator was incapable of relaying the message. Here is a sampling of something not truly plagiarism but a demonstration on how a message can be delivered to a wider audience than the originator:
Both performances are strong in their own right but I would never have listened to the Dolly Parton original if it hadn't been for the Whitney Houston cover in the the movie (Bodyguard).
For my own part when I write something, I have no issue with someone copying it word for word (although I find it unlikely). While it would be nice to receive credit for the thought, the message is more important and it would be better for the message to be transferred by someone with a larger following.
To me, plagiarism is the attempt to make a fortune or falsely try to seek fame out of someone else's hard work, creativity or innovation. It is a cowardly and selfish act of dishonesty, not only to the stakeholders of your demeaning intention, but most importantly, to yourself.
I don't really understand how people can even live with that, how can they actually go to sleep after doing something of this sort and feeling no remorse whatsoever! As far as plagiarism in writing is concerned, my heart goes out to all those who have been victims of this cowardice at least once in their lives. When someone decides to write, they use 'words' as way of expressing and sharing an experience they went through in their lives. They use these words to empower someone else about something they know and/or have knowledge of. It's a sum of their thoughts, ideas and experiences that they went through. It could be due to the best moments they ever lived, or the very painful times they had to witness and be part of. How can a person even rob someone of all that and be at peace?
Suggestion to all those who have ever done or plan on doing this in future:
"Your own life will give you enough moments to think, innovate and write on.. You don't have to disrespect yourself by undermining your own life and stealing someone else's... Trust me, even if your false intentions make you famous and earn you millions in the short-run, one day you'll look at the mirror and you'll be like... why man? I was better than that!"
Respect yourself, value your own thoughts and have patience.. Your time will come, too! A little bit of faith, that's it.

This happens very often in universities because some students buy and copy and steal articles and scientific ideas in order to complete their university assignments.
finally there is a tolerance of plagiarism which is accepted as it could be considered as telepathic of thoughts and it happen a lot. However the accepted limits of plagiarism variate from university to another.

Marouani demanded compensation, Kirkorov allegedly agreed, summoned the composer to Moscow, and told him in the police for extortion. Maruani was arrested, then released, and he immediately left Russia.
And Kirkorov acts as if nothing had happened, he also laughs at various talk shows over the hapless Frenchman.

Plagiarism is stealing other peoples content and claiming to be its original author. For example, this steemit post is plagiarism because the author literally copy pasted the whole post from this article.

A lot of posts are just copyed from other steemit users or from news pages.Really sad people try to abuse other peoples work to earn money here. I m happy that there are some bots doing a nice job to protect us from plagiarism.

I think it can be very hard to come up with origional content and ideas in this age where everything has been done before, it is the way humans work by taking an idea and building on it, for example all modern technology is just other peoples ideas being built on and developed. as long as its not an intentional direct copy of someones work, then its just evolution of ideas
There is no such thing called plagiarism except if you simply copy and paste stuff you didn't write.
But if you improve it and refer the original idea to the owner this will be called creativity and being smart.
Ideas can't be found out of nowhere, it is transferred to us from others in parts from different sources, and we compile and form them based on what our background demand and our knowledge reach.

Plagiarism itself is copying without crediting others hard work.
What I see is that civilization is built on the copying and further improve and modification of existing technology. Without the accumulation of existing technology and work, the advancement of the civilization would not have happened. The most important is that people should learn on how to appreciate the previous work done by others and not be taking everything back to themselves.
It is not nice to copy someone else hard work and pretending that you have done it. Instead you must give the credit to that original consent writer and put a link..
After all you need to do something unique to sustain.. even if you copies someone else content you want last forever.. but if you done something on your own it will remain forever and you will gain more popularity.

Plagiarism, by the English oxford dictionary, edition 6, was defined as the act plagiarizing, that is copying another persons ideas, words or works and pretend that they are your own
So for me, from this explanation, you can only pretend that they are your own only if you are fully aware that they are not yours. So sometimes, you might just use someone's work maybe coincidentally, but it should not be accounted for as plagiarism. Let me sight some examples
But then a times plagiarism comes in handful, like in the case of Martin Luther King, as you stated above, even after his work was proved to contain some content of plagiarism, the school refused to revoke his degree, saying that his dissertation, despite its short coming, had contributed a lot to the field..
