Commenting seems to be the most lucrative way of earning steem on steemit. If you think about it, curation rewards are very low and unless you have a big account you won't make much by just curating content. On the other side, commenting can be very lucrative. I've seen comments with 1000 USD rewards.
How to make money by commenting on posts
If you like a post, you can of course up vote it, but i would suggest you to write a comment with your up vote. Try to respond to the original post with some helpful information. In most cases if the OP of the post is in a good mood he will up vote your comment and you will most likely earn some money. But don't just say things like "Keep up the good work" or "Very nice article", those comments are flattering but useless and you won't get any up vote.
Get noticed by the whales in the comments
The easiest way to get noticed by the whales is not by posting a full article, is by commenting on articles that are already popular. Whales are visiting those articles, they are up voting those articles and most importantly, they are reading the comments and up voting the best comments.
Whales want interaction, they want to build a community
Whales are trying to build a full scale community on steemit and the only way to do so is to create activity. They want people to interact with eacher other, they want articles to get as many good comments as possible. How do i know that ? If you read the github conversations between the admins you will notice that they didn't want to penalize heavy posting of comments because they want people to interact as much as possible. They did penalize heavy posting of articles but not comments.
Examples of comments who got well rewarded
End word
I wish you all a happy commenting and good rewards ! And don't forget to add value in each one of your comments.
Good point, the curation rewards are miniscule, while comments have the potential to get fairly big (they are effectively posts in themselves).
That makes sense, since comments actually add far more value than an upvote.
Just like your comment added value to the post.
I upvoted you. I guess I should leave a comment too. That proves 2 things: That I'm not a bot, and that I actually read the story.... Man, I loved that Tone Vays comment! I'm not a fan.
LOL ;)
'Great article', but it actually was! Also you should mention that as well as curation rewards and upvotes for articles you should also upvote interesting comments that you see on posts as you will get curation rewards for that too. I very rarely comment, mostly because I prefer reading/listening to broadcasting. So for people like me, upvoting other comments is a nice way to earn steempower also.
Well, sometimes i don't comment too if i have nothing to say. But i try to comment as much as possible.

The first 11 reputation user i've seen so far.
And here is another one - @olya :)
The reputation was reset a few minutes after his comment.
Comments add very much value to the platform. It's good that the system rewards participation!
Agreed !
Yes, I agree. It is logical and natural. If I go to any event where there are habitues, it will be proper to first listen to what these habitues say. Then quite logically and correctly to try to understand their ideas and try to develop them. It is wise. It is unwise to try to climb on the podium and start to broadcast your theme.
I'm not saying now that we should adapt to others and to abandon our own vision. No. I mean, if you come as a guest, as a novice, it is important to try to harmoniously fit in the space, and not to blow it up with revolutionary ideas.
Thank you for your thoughts, @najoh, they are useful.
Love your comment, i hope it get up voted by a whale !
Whales are smart, they want to us to do proof of comment. We should create a pool comment mining so we all get part of the stake. Value of this comment is over 9000!
I can see that ! To the moon !
Thak you very much ! This was very informative for me, as ive been adding comments, but not often enough! Sometimes im just too rushed. But i will definately try harder now, as im on steemit alot more now. TY! 👆👍
Keep up the good work ! Just kidding ;)
You should not just comment for the sake of possible rewards, but instead comment if you have to add something usefull in the conversation.
This is what i'm saying, but let's not forget that this platform attracted people with promises of money, so it's an important part of it. Tell everyone that from now on no more money is involded and only 3% of users will stay.
I think commenting just makes the whole experience more human and social too.
I'm happier with comments than just up votes.
For whales, curation rewards outweigh comment rewards overall.
Yes, but most of us are not whales, so commenting is better for normal users.
This is very important. I think it is also more rewarding for the post maker if people interact and show that they have actually read it.
Yes absolutely. If i get a small reward but tons of positive comments is good enough to keep going.
Exactly it is what one of my teachers used to call "food for the soul". It keeps you going and one seemingly insignificant piece of praise or interaction can make another person's day.
