A PROPOSAL TO SET UP NEWBIES GUIDERS

in #steemit7 years ago (edited)

I write this post because I am having difficulties guiding the people I introduced to steemit. I'm very good in convincing people to believe in something, but I have a hard time following them up. I have been spreading the good news of steemit to all my friends, relatives, neighbours and others. Some of them have successfully registered, but handling all their questions is becoming a problem to me.

I believe in steemit and I am working towards its growth in South-eastern Nigeria. Recently, I have introduced some people who haven't started doing anything because they don't know how to get started and I don't know how to help them either. You'll agree with me that steemit user interface is not as easy as other social networks, so people get a little bit confused after signing up. I can't handle answering all the questions they come up with. I also have my health to take care of.

We have a lot of marketers, what we now need is a good follow up team

I did a post on facebook about steemit, and someone messaged me telling me to explain steemit more to him. He said he has already registered, but doesn't understand it. When I asked how he got to know about steemit, he said it was through a YouTube video. The video introduced him to steemit, but he still needs some assistance.

Not knowing what to do could be the reason some people who registered here are inactive. I believe a lot of people have left steemit because they couldn't get along with the way things work here. I would have been among those that left in such manner because the person who introduced me to steemit didn't follow me up. He asked me to figure out things myself. I tried asking some questions in the general channel on steemit chat, but I was ignored. I had to spend weeks on google search before I stumbled on some posts that helped me to get started. Because it's not everyone that will be able to do such, that is the reason for this proposal.

My Proposal

I hereby make a proposal to steemit.com Inc. to set up Newbies Guiders. Some good steemians should be assigned the duty to properly guid newbies. There should be a channel on steemit chat where steemit marketers can direct all the potential users to.

A simple break down of what I mean

1. Steemit should set up guiders to help our newbies.

2. The guiders should have a channel on steemit chat.

3. There should be an appropriate means to reward these guiders.

4. Marketers should direct all the potential users to register on steemit chat and join the channel.

5. The guiders should help them successfully create an account.

4. The guiders should follow them up until they have fully understood how the community operates.

Conclusion

I've been worried about telling more people about steemit because I can't handle those I've already introduced. If something like this can be established, I believe I'll put in more effort in recruiting more steemit users. I also believe that this will help a lot of people whose accounts are inactive to start participating fully.

This is just my own suggestion on what I think could help our newbies and encourage the growth of steemit. I'll be glad to have you share what you think would be best for this network.

Please leave your suggestions in comments below.

Special thanks to all those who have contributed to help the African/Nigerian community here.

Hello @ogoowinner

I think that the best solution to this is find a way to create tutorial on youtube, I recently opened a whatsapp group where I guide the people I introduced to steemit, but there are a lot of things to teach.

I often tell someone asking me for direction to read the whitepaper and the FAQ section before asking me for any more directions, but they still get confused on some certain aspects.

I think that it is best they sign up and go through the learning process slowly and not want to know everything at once.

@ogochukwu

Hi, @ogochukwu. I absolutely agree with you about creating tutorials on youtube channel and having whatsapp groups. Some of my youtube videos in my channel are steemit tutorials. https://www.youtube.com/channel/UCy_5lUYyiSeCZSpLquv_Hig . Some veteran steemians like @stellabelle, have commended my efforts in those video tutorials, others have voted on the content when I post the tutorial on steemit. The newbies themselves who watch my video tutorials, one of whom is @smyle have found those videos good resources. Regarding whatsapp groups. I created a whatsapp group. We are 15 in that group so far and It's not an easy job to mentor /follow up people.

The point is mostNigerians dont like reading. Even if you direct them to faq, people that will visit that page wont be uo to 5%.

I think what we have to do is to form stronger alliance and produce highly felt result. This will make them pay more attention.

Followed and upvoted

You got my point. They usually want to have it like facebook. They don't want to read and steemit is not easy to understand.

normal people aren't going to read a fucking white paper

I tell them to read the FAQ too, but they'll even ask you where to find the it. I receive a lot of unwanted calls and messages. I'm slowing down on my steemit activities because of my health. I can't handle them anymore.

Try a different strategy with the type of audience, and they will do the rest! Perhaps the right kind of audience. Sorry about your health. i lost my own health

This really would be a great addition to the site as I myself am new and I'm still not 100% confident with how everything works. I have a friend who told me of this site but did little to educate me on it and I've mostly had to learn myself. If rewards were given for guiding others then more users would be educated and less would be scared away from lack of knowledge, allowing the community to thrive and grow even more - this is a win/win scenario for the guides and the newbies. Excellent idea @ogoowinner and greetings to the African community of Steemit from Scotland!

Rewards are given for guiding others.

Look how many posts have been made on Steemit describing basically all aspects regarding how the platform works. The author rewards for those posts are rewards given exactly for the purpose you are mentioning.

exactly dude i cant believe these people are advocating forthis

I know that @anonimnotoriu. But how easy is it for newbies to find such posts?

I find it to be extremely easy. One just has to go to the search field next to 'Submit a Story' and write things like 'steemit guide, steemit tips, steemit help, etc.'. There is a ton of information describing how the platform works. We can't really force people to learn though.

You are right. They keep disturbing me because they don't really have the passion to learn it themselves.

Thanks for your contribution @anonimnotoriu.

Welcome on board @imerisu. I wish they'll consider this proposal. However, a lot of steemians have put up posts and videos to explain a lot of things here. Somehow, I believe having a direct guid would be better.

Thanks for reading this.

One to understand that will help the journey is: Steemit is everyone's! i give a day to teaching steemit

From reading the blog and replies in the comments there seems to be 2 different types of people.

Those who are willing to read

Compile a list of commonly ask questions and make a blog post answering them that you send to people when they ask a question. It will be shorter and less intimidating than the FAQ and it can go into further details directed towards the people you are getting to sign up.

When I first started I made a simple and short guide that I passed around when I notice someone was asking for help or was struggling. Now that is outdated and it was in address of certain types of people that I was encountering. But you can kind of see the types of people and who my target audience was.

There is a very long list of things that TimCliff had the community summit and he assembled found here. For those go getters that want a really long resource with lots of tips inside

Those that was visual aid:

Create another guide that includes links to visual aids. There are a lot of guides out there that have quite a few images to show and illustrations there point along with text. @Scrooger makes a few guides like that.

His animated text dividers guide has a list at the bottom linking a bunch of other guides. He covers a wide range of topics randowhale, post payout decreasing, formatting and editing, free text dividers, voting power explained (it’s a little outdated in voting theory), thumbnails fast and easy, Steemit notifications, many ways to gain following. Some of them could be out dated, They are however well written and include a lot of photos.

I don’t follow jerrybanfield. But I know he puts out a lot of videos and he focus on helping members of the community out with information. Perhaps someone will be willing to help you find videos that explain things that you then can include in the blog.

start a new hashtag

I don’t know how many people you are onboarding but I assume man power is the issue. So start a new hashtag and ask them to make blogs asking their questions under it. Those that want to help can use that hashtag and answer questions. More importantly make sure they know if someone helps them out they should upvote that persons comment. Once they know how to do something you should recommend they check out the hashtag and assist other new people like they are and be rewarded with an upvote from that person.

This creates a community, engages users to learn and then help others out while also giving them the opportunity to be reward for helping. It can solve the lack of man power over time, and help people be more fluent with how Steemit works.

I once in a while have people I follow post a blog asking for help in regarding things. It really is the best way of getting help is just by asking. Creating a place where people will know to check for questions makes it easier for them to be found.

Hello @ogoowinner. Let me begin by saying your proposal is in order and very timely too. I understand how difficult it is to guide particularly Nigerians because most of them dont like reading. Yes thats the hard truth.

I introduced more than 67 of my whatsapp based friends to steemit including @smyle and also created a whatsap group so as to guide them properly. I spent more time guiding them than i spend on steemit. I did a post where i announce their entrancehttps://steemit.com/introduceyourself/@eurogee/a-personal-effort-towards-a-more-virile-steemit-community-introducing-67-new-steemians-in-one-swoop-vol-1 .it is sad that despite all efforts being made to get them serious, only @smyle and a few more are really catching the joke.

I want to personally appeal to you @ogoowinner for a formidable alliance between all serious minded Nigerians. Lets all build social bridges and help one another towards forming a mutually beneficial sub community. I want to appreciate your efforts in SIN project.

I am Chukwuka Aneke from ur region south east Nigeria. Thanks for your time. I am @eurogee

Chukwuemeka I'm glad to see you here. Please pm me on steemit chat. @ehiboss has created a whatsapp group for us.

Thanks for your response. The truth is that i have been trying to access the chat site to no avail in order to communicate you. Can i drop my number here for onwardre commendation to @ehiboss for addition?

The thing is pacing. You simply have to be firm yourself in your conviction before the next step. You have to climb the ladder to the top before pulling others up!

Also agter the guiders work
They have to feel the support
Its devastating for alot to put genuine material amd no one supports it.

They have to feel the difference.

Good points u mentioned in ur post

Thank you. I think the introduction of communities will handle that part.

Thanks for reading @marwa.

@ogoowinner i always appreciate your post, but i beg to differ on this. Setting up a guider for beginners is great, but i do not appreciate the fact that some people are just damn write mentally lazy, its not because they don't have the capacity to learn but, just rather everything to be spoon fed them like babies not wanting to task themselves. Good things come at a price, to have quality you would agree with me that you to commit painstaking effort and time, don't let ever comprise real value which is i this case the discipline of research. I am a newbie on steemit everything i know was not thought to me neither did anybody follow me up, i saw a good thing in steemit (freedom) and i went after it, i didn't at first but i know my capacity for learning fast so, i simply committed time, battery life and data to know. I am hard here because i am sick of the mental laziness i have observed among the youth of today! We to respect this natural law nothing comes easy....take a listen to my post https://steemit.com/art/@djuvantebit/courage-for-the-simple-the-future

@djuvantebit, I love your contribution here. I know it's mental laziness that's making them over depend on someone else to teach them everything. Nonetheless, I think that a little help will keep them moving. I'll take a look at your blog later.

Thanks for reading.

The idea of guiders is an excellent one, since the goal is to make steemit the number one social media in the globe it is important to have people guided accordingly. learning could be broken down into number of weeks and learning activities until newbies are fully ready to stir the wheels for themselves. kudos @ogoowinner for this wonderful suggestion.

Tom (@donkeypong) and Kevin (@kevinwong) created a new users guide a while back, and also condensed that into a 10 page PDF. The PDF is linked below.

https://drive.google.com/file/d/0BzjutiBS2DthaG96WmxCT0F2dmc/view

There is also a 40 page book that is on Amazon, but it is showing as unavailable at the moment - not certain what the story is there.

https://www.amazon.com/Steemit-101-Blockchain-Social-Platform/dp/1537774646

I read through the PDF. The power down time needs to be updated, but other than that it looks good. Would be nice to have some veterans look it over and give their feedback.

Thanks for letting us know about this @lydon.sipe.

Some more resources beyond the FAQ's available on steemit.com and steem.io:

  1. https://www.steem.center/

  2. https://steemit.com/steemit/@sethlinson/announcing-steemit-explained-a-new-animated-series

Thank you for helping out with these links @anonimnotoriu.

nice suggestion @ogoowinner but i would like to say that anything one has success in has to do with passion, perseverance and consistency. even with the introduction of guiders if one doesnt have these attitudes towards steemit its pointless. those people surely belong to some other social networks right now, perhaps engaging very actively without reaping any benefits and am positive they were are no guiders on those platforms, all anyone has to do is spend time here doing the things the do on other platforms and the benefits will come. i just made a post listing some benefits of being on steemit
https://steemit.com/steemit/@darkerhorse/read-this-5-benefits-of-being-an-active-steemit-user-you-would-appreciate
this should help anyone recognise the potentials of being active on steemit. As regards using the nigerian tag, i have been using the #nigeria in a most of my post since the commencement of project bigwave but am yet to see the difference it makes using it. i hope that changes for me at some point as am always proud to identify with the nigerian community on steemit.

Thanks for your comment @darkhorse. I'll go through that post later.

We can always talk if need be!

You are very generous, I agree with your proposal, you are very concerned about the beginner. You are very good, it's hard to get your best friend.

I agree, the whole learning curve to steemit is pretty steep. At first it seems easy but soon you will find out it is a lot harder than it seems. A good guide which explains everything step by step without being too long is needed... All the information is out there currently but not offered in one complete package. After several weeks of using this platform, I feel like I have only recently gotten a grip on how things actually work and I consider myself to be an above average computer literate.

I hope they look into this @pandorasbox.

Thanks for reading.

@marwa @gabriellasam @bitcoin1288 @mihonik @duckmast3r @ogoowinner
Steemit has the potential

Steemit has the infrastructure

Steemit has reason for me as a dentist to blog

yet steemit needs:
algorithms
more APIs
ACCOUNT levels in coordination with reputation
Steemit ADs maybe
thirdparty implementations

and certainly OPEN SOURCE CODE with back end security to make all this happen.

and yes SOCIAL MEDIA INTEGRATION... since steemit is the social media we all need.

Thank you for this @zaid.

no thank you for opening my mind to such discussion @ogoowinner
@ziad waiting for more from you

Are you aware Steemit is Open source before this inclusion?

and certainly OPEN SOURCE CODE with back end security to make all this happen.

the list of needs were seperated from the last two lines, what i meant that certainly for it to still be an OPEN SOURCE after all that, cuz its very hard to maintain security while serving all those needs. sorry for the misintrepretation.

No worries mate....

Thank you for understanding :D

That's a really good suggestion for making this platform the best.

9ce one my sister, it's necessary. Awesome write up. Am glad to meet lots of my country people here, including you. You guys are Really Steeming on. I fully understood how steemit works after meeting you guys. And my reputation is increasing. Thank u all. One love.
I JUST FOLLOWED YOU.

Thank you for reading @ememovic. Have you joined the African community on steemit chat? If you haven't, indicate and I'll mention you there.

I haven't, pls mention me there,
---thanks.

That is if newbies will be patient enough to be an established steemians and not be buying upvote for shitty posts!

Lol! Let them successfully come on board first. Thanks for reading @olowoleolaide.

lol, thanks for deforming my name too😆😆😆😆

Hahahahaha! I called it igbotically.

Great Post Keep Going @ogoowinner
Following You :)

Really a very nice suggestion @ogoowinner! But I think this will still take some time before being realised!
Just have an idea for you for the time being to help out those you brought in here : Organize a weekly class for like 1 hour and gather all those willing to learn and you show them.

Lol! That's the point I'm trying to make. I'm not good at tutoring people. I need someone else to do that for me. I can easily convince them to join, someone else should follow them up.

Ah alright @ogoowinner! I misunderstood it completely, sorry for that!
I hope someone comes up with an idea and helps out soon!

No problem. Thanks for reading and contributing @progressivechef.

You are so right @ogoowinner, it's hard to follow up. Last month I made a FB group that shows simple steps to get started, I think I brought over 700+. They were still confused haha.

I would like steemit to create a simple guide for minnows to get started :)

Thanks for this @stackin. We do need simple guid for new users.

Very nice friend

Thank you.

I'm trying to convince some friends also. Steemit is a great tool.

Great job @mihonik. Keep it up.

totally agree with your point.

Thank you.

i liked your points make sense.

Thank you.

This will be a nice idea to implement.

This will be good for all.

Yeah. Thanks for reading @steemphotography.

i totally agree with you,i got to know about steemit through Jerry Banfield's advert on facebook. May be if i had gotten mentorship i could have gotten more traction. I'll be glad to help in my own little way.

very nice thing if it works.

@cutiepie, I pray it succeeds. Thank you.

Thanks for this

You're welcome.

Yes, @ogoowinner that is a good suggestion. I was a victim of the same fate. I registered in April, left and came back in July. I left because I did not understand the operations. So I support the idea of providing a channel chat to serve a school for newly registered steemians.

We can talk, if needed

Hi @ogoowinner

I know this isn't a full or perfect solution, but you can link some of these users to a lot of @JerryBanfield 's videos. He's done a lot of great tutorial vids aimed directly at new users. Very basic, step-by-step stuff that can really help.

Try linking them to his blog posts or YT videos on tutorials.

GREAT idea!
As a newbie still (less than three weeks here) I would love to have such assistance and guidance. I understand some basics but as a person new to the cryptocurrency and block- chain world, it would be nice to have a support staff and system.

We can certainly talk!

Hi @ogoowinner, first of all I agree with your suggestion. Secondly, there is a Steemit Chat being run by @the-ego-is-you which is called Guides_and_Information_for_Steem. It contains some nice guides in the pinned messages.

I know that because my guide about Steemit Rewards is pinned at the top right now.

I don't know how Steemit Inc. sets up a guider like that but as an active community helper, I will soon come up with newbies Steemit guide of my own. I will give you the link to it soon.

I have one suggestion for you.
Whenever, someone asks you tell him more about Steemit, schedule a training session with him of 3 to 4 hours and charge him for this time. Show your profile to them and tell them that they can also earn money like you after attending your session. In this way, you can earn money locally and bring the newcomers to this platform. What say?

Guiders hein? Hmmm.... Thats like introducing MMM concept into steemit.... It just wont work. Basically any newbie starting up should go through the quick starter guide and do th basic things listed out there....

In any case, i run an institution where we introduce people to bitcoin technology and how to harness it to build wealth. Lets liaise together, i can provide the guiders training you need for the people you introduce to steemit.

Lets take this to the next level ok. I like your initiative, and i will work with you to build it into reality.

Learn & make daily profits by trading bitcoins online:

Chat with me on whatsapp 07037220358
#BMExpress

Even though rewards could attract some good guiders, but it can still attract rotten users trying to benefit from the system built.

I'm happy to guide newcomers when they come to chat or discord asking for help. It's not always about rewards, but in the best case scenario, the guided one will grow big and help me later on if I need any help.

The community is a community, helping is something we should do already because we care for each other and the community.

Very good initiative if those you want to help are hardworking and will agree that here is no get rich fast scheme rather a platform that rewards hardwork, patience and dedication. 100% upvoted to send in my support to you.
