If upvoting gave the upvoter no compensation, if upvoting only gave the article upvoted compensation - what would the result be?

You know it exists.
Watch the popular posters who earn money, and Upvote at X time….whether you’ve read the article or not, in the hopes of earning for your upvote.
What is the purpose of upvoting?
As I see it – to show appreciation for a quality post and to give reward to the poster for their unique contribution.
Would people still upvote, if the upvoters gained no compensation for upvoting?
YES.
And their upvotes would be more authentic.
I would upvote for no compensation, out of authentic appreciation for a post.
I would upvote to support the efforts of the community.
I would upvote to support the efforts of the friends and connections in my “Follow” community.
This may result in less upvoting.
That’s OK.
Maybe 1 upvote will end up having the impact of what was previously 5 or 10 upvotes.
Being new to Steemit, when I upvote someone I usually do not see any change in the $ going to the author. Yesterday I upvoted someone, and the $ they received raised by one cent. The measure of satisfaction at my impact was palpable, “I’m making a difference for this author.” It sounds silly, because how much difference does one cent make? But I saw the measureable result of my upvote, and that gave me satisfaction.
This change would increase engagement through comments.
Thoughtful comments would be upvoted (by the main article's author and others), thus giving the commenter some compensation.
ADD THIS: Consider having no compensation for posting a comment on a popular piece, unless that comment receives upvoting.
This cuts down on bullshit comments, as they won't be upvoted, thus the commenter would not receive compensation.
How can we support the true spirit of Steemit, and limit the money “game”?

Hey @spark. Thanks for your comment on my post that lead me here, and for keeping it relevant to the discussion.
I think you raise some good points, but once you start talking about removing rewards, no matter where from, people don't want to listen. Curation rewards are an incentive to vote. Unfortunately incentivization and income through social media are two things that make Steemit appeal to the wider audience. Economically, curation rewards were probably never viable, being that anyone can create a automatic voting bot and reap rewards that way, but that's one reason why curation rewards are very minimally and only really equate to large profits when your Steem Power is higher.
Here's a tip for your posts in the future: If you want to get more votes, build a network of followers by promoting your posts on www.steemit.chat or on other social media website pages dedicated to Steemit, like on Facebook. This will help your posts to get seen among all the other stuff that's being made. Being seen is a problem here, and until they fix it, promoting your posts is one way to work around it. Otherwise, I hope you enjoy Steemit, and don't be a afraid to voice your opinion.

Even with 1000 followers, all posts in the "new" section move down as new posts come out... doesn't matter how many followers you have, it's irrelevant.

Hi Spark ... Steem has many rules, I am over whelmed by so many, so I just post what interests me and maybe some one else will find it interesting too. Up votes? Can you say bots ~ for the few that obey the rules!
I don't know the ins and outs of bots. I suppose I'll hear more about it as I get deeper in. And I hear you - about the rules. There's a lot of tech info here that goes over my head. I'm a firm believer in that the current economic model of STEEM payouts isn't sustainable. Everyone wants money for their posts but other than investors buys STEEM we don't actually have any revenue streams coming in to pay the authors.
Curation rewards are part of the problem here for sure.. It's part of the reason you see people piling on votes on what I would "crap" content.
Have to see where this heads. Glad to see such a young STEEM account hopping into the politics of the platform so fast.

I have tried engaging some users through the comments to make it more interactive and possibly more fun to earn rewards.
Hasn't worked thus fur but I will keep trying new things.
Not sure what the community really wants.
Some just want rewards, while others want to be more social as this is after all a social media.
Would love it if you hosted a Steemit Larping competition.
If you make a post about it, I'm sure that more people would also love the idea.

Thanks for the welcome! I'm not sure what a Steemit Larping competition would look like. Larping is a whole lot more than dressing up in costumes with foam swords, of course. Story, plot, character development, roleplaying/interating in character within the story/plots. Say more about your proposal! :)
I will think of something interesting. I'm sure the community would love to gather somewhere for a day or two and just get to know each other in real life and maybe have a drink. Then out of nowhere larping action starts. We may even continue it into guild wars. Could be interesting. However you are the game master so you would know a lot more lol.
