After 17 months on Steemit I just reached 3000 followers. It took 10 months to get to 1000 and another 3 to 2000. All this is without ever asking people to follow me. I want it to be purely their choice based on what I do here.
You can see I comment a lot and I believe is the main way they find me. If your comments are interesting enough then people will check out your profile to see if you are worth following.
I want followers who engage with me. I know a lot of these are inactive or just hoping I'll follow them back, but I get plenty of feedback these days.
I follow a fair few myself, but I have to keep trimming that as there's just not enough time to read everything. I'll concentrate on those who share my main interests. Don't take it personally if I stop following you.
Will I get to 5000 in another year?

You're right, as always. Just because someone doesn't get a follow back doesn't mean you don't look at their stuff from time to time.
TBH I often comment without voting. Activity on an account is worth just as much as an upvote unless it's an upvote form a whale like you. :-)
I'm no whale. With the minnows I value their opinions more than their votes. I'll generally vote when I comment unless the post is doing really well anyway

Congrats! I signed up a couple years ago but became inactive for about a year. I just recently reengaged with Steemit and finding a focus around music. I am one of your more recent followers and look forward to more posts coming from you.

First of all congratulation for reaching 3000 followers. As far as i remember i came to know about you after you left a comment on my post. I found your content interesting to read and thus followed you. personally I never follow people with intention of getting a follow back. I believe in forming a healthy community with out having any expectations with each other. expectations ruin relationships.
