I submitted my first pull request for Steemit.com to the GitHub repository!

in #steemit9 years ago (edited)

Many of you have probably been wondering why I haven't been posting much in the past two weeks. Well, other than spending time with my family with the holidays - I have been busy coding :)

Since I joined, I have been fairly involved with the Steemit.com development process.

About two weeks ago, I decided to start on what I felt was the next logical phase of my Steemit journey - to actually start making code changes myself. Today I submitted my first update to the GitHub repository!

https://github.com/steemit/steemit.com/pull/923

It isn't anything super fancy, but it makes a bunch of much needed edits and additions to the "Welcome Page" content.

(Note: The "Welcome to Steemit" banner image update is not part of this pull request. We are still working on that - stay tuned.)

Here are the changes that were submitted via the pull request:

  • Updated a lot of wording as per suggestions from @sneak and @pfunk
  • Standardized capitalization using the rules from @sneak and @pfunk
  • Clarified where to find the "Helpful Posts from Steemit Users" section
  • Added info on where to find the 'Welcome Page' in the menu
  • Added info on the new decline payout option
  • Added info for the new sections in the user profile menu: Feed, Change Password, Settings, and Logout
  • Removed language to "check replies frequently" since notifications have now been added
  • Clarified instructions for users to backup and secure their password
  • Added instructions to setup user profile and avatar
  • Added instructions to set "NSFW" display setting
  • Added new content to the "Helpful Posts from Steemit Users" section
  • Added a link to Steemit Help (steemithelp.net) in the "Other Resources" section
  • Added a link to the Steem Blockchain Explorer (steemdb.com) in the "Other Resources" section
  • Added a "Third Party References" disclaimer section to make sure it is clear that the third-party sites and posts listed are not affiliated with Steemit, Inc.

The pull request has not been approved yet, so there are no guarantees it will make it up on the live site. I plan to work with the Steemit dev team to make any changes necessary in order to get it accepted though. Hopefully we will see the updates live on the site soon!

Sort:

@timcliff by far one of the best examples of what we should expect of witnesses here on Steemit. Good luck on the pull request.

I second this. @timcliff is a great asset to our community.

Thanks @lpfaust! I really appreciate your support / kind words :)

Your dedication and commitment to the priorities of your life, including the ones on steemit.com are most appreciated on my end. Thanks a bunch for all your great work and dedicated time. All for one and one for all!!! Namaste :)

Welcome! Namaste to you as well :)

Awesome mate. You are such a valuable member of the community - thank you for everything you do!

Right back at you!

I am really excited to be getting your https://www.steemithelp.net/ page up on the welcome page :-)

(assuming the PR is approved)

i third that.

Thanks @stellabelle :-) I always appreciate your support / kind words!

I've never been happier about an update to my witness votes than when I voted for you timcliff. You really are smashing it!

Thanks @benjojo!! I really appreciate it :-)

Yes, I HAD wondered where you were :-)
Good work!

The mouse of approval (from https://steemit.com/steemit/@trevor.george/stepping-into-the-flagging-debate-just-a-little-bit)

LOL - made my day! Thanks :-)

Awesome! You were one of my first truly informed witness votes and I made a great choice :)

:) Thanks!!

I'm so happy to see your post #1 trending. You deserve it.

Thanks for the hard work!!

Thanks Tim! Have a wonderful and prosperous new year!

Welcome :) Thanks, same to you!

Keep up the good work man! We love you!

Wow great job! I hope to be joining you one day in submitting pull requests :P

Thanks :) I hope so too! If you have any questions, let me know. Honestly, I spent 90% of my time just getting the Steemit.com code up and running and figuring out how to use GitHub. The actual code changes were the easy part ;)

Yea I still have to learn github. Been busy trying to revive @voteinterestpool and learning to be a witness. I have lots of questions lol but it's hard to get responses from other witnesses sometimes. I appreciate all the help @timcliff

Cool, great work! :-) Maybe you and @bitcoiner can nudge the STEEM team to spend some resources on marketing the front page too, here's the associated issue on GitHub: https://github.com/steemit/steemit.com/issues/734

They will be releasing their roadmap soon. Hopefully we will see something along those lines on it.

That would be cool if they addressed that, fingers crossed.

Agreed. @sneak ran a competition a week or so ago for who could come up with the "worst" Steemit slogan. There were some really good ones. @pfunk submitted "Welcome to the Blockchain". I laughed.

Yeh, that was funny. I submitted "Where you lose money if you are a troll" when they posted that. :-)

hard worker! I have some suggestions about the first welcome landing page....can you chat tomorrow?

The "Welcome to the Blockchain" one?

actually the main welcome page, with all the text....

I'm on steemit.chat now if you want to chat

basically, all i am asking is that a nice photo, something like what appears on steemithelp.net goes on the welcome page...the page that people see after they enter their password, and see all that text.

We are planning to put a banner image on the top (post here). Was that what you had in mind, or something more than that?

Really nice attention to detail. It's the details that truly distinguish the pros from the amateurs. Thank your tedious work in regards to making this platform even better!

Thanks @lexikon082 - I really appreciate that. Attention to detail is probably one of the most important traits in a software developer ;)

Excellent work Mr. @timcliff, for your dedication, commitment and transparent way of working, I would have you for sure that I would reach your desired goal.
Congratulations, count on me for what you need
Thank you so much for what you do for our community.

Thanks @jlufer! I really appreciate your kind words and support :-)

Also, as a selection for being a top pick today, you have been awarded a TRAIL token for your participation on our innovative platform...STEEM.
Please visit SteemTrail to get instructions on how to claim your TRAIL token today.

Happy TRAIL!

Wow, that's awesome! Thank you :-)

Downvoted for too much auto self-voting. If you want to give @timcliff a TRAIL token, that is great and he no doubt deserves it. In doing so you are posting an advertisement for your service, which also might be okay. But I do not think you should use the trail voters under your control to upvote your own comment and pay yourself $1 for posting such advertisements.

@timcliff sorry for the negative comment on your post. I do not intend to take anything away from your contribution nor SteemTrail's recognition of it.

No problem @smooth! I know you are always doing what you think is in the best interest of the community :)
