In contextual learning, students must be directly involved in the learning context. The goal is to motivate students and help them understand the real subject of learning, and to give them access to learning in the context of their daily lives. That way, students are expected to understand what they are learning through learning by doing.
One way to engage students through contextual learning is to engage students in Earth Day activities that will take place in April. Obviously, it is very interesting to apply to students at the elementary level of education as an effort to cultivate the caring character of the environment at an early age.
What comes to my mind is to involve students in Earth Day celebrations by giving role to students as Earth Agents who have a mission to save the earth. Students are instructed by teachers to campaign for environmental care to their families. This should be done because I believe that the problems for the earth are the adults with their various activities, such as littering, using excessive energy or other contamination problems that are mostly done by adults. Therefore, they need to be reminded through their children as the Earth Agent.
The procedure of this activity is every student should be instilled caring character of environment by teacher at the school. Then, students are taught how to invite others to care about the environment, either by invitation method or by reprimand. After that, each student is given a mission by the teacher to campaign Earth Day to their family, such as inviting their parents to save on water and energy use, using public transportation, asking not to use plastic bags, enticing to plant trees in their backyard, or anything else related to save the earth.
Furthermore, students are instructed to write down what activities and how they campaign environmental awareness to their families on Earth Day celebrations. The following week, students are asked by teachers to tell their classmates about their activities. After the activity is finished, the teacher motivates the students to continue doing other positive things related to the environment, especially when in the school environment so that they are familiar with the attitude of care for the earth.
That is my idea of how to engage students in Earth Day celebration. As a teacher, I am waiting your interesting ideas to celebrate Earth Day!

LOVE it! I think how you touch on how students should take Earth Day initiatives home to their families is excellent!
