Learning with Memory Techniques: The Periodic Table of Elements (76-80)

This is an easy way to learn Osmium, Iridium, Platinum, Gold and Mercury. Learning with memory techniques is much easier than rote repetition. Especially when the images are already layed out to you in a clear and intuitive way. We will cover five elements per post with special training images for all elements and numbers. Please check out our other episodes for more elements.

Elements Legend

Each element comes with a special training image. These contain the element number, a common application, a phonetically similar image for the name and the element symbol. The color of each training image indicates the element category.

The Major System for Numbers

To memorize all elements by number we will use the Visual Major System to encode numbers into images. Please make sure you understand its principles. Here is a quick reminder how this system works:
  • We encode digits into consonants
  • We pair the letters with phonetically similar consonants
  • Vowels are free to create words
  • Below on the graphic are the ten main letters

76. Osmium

In the Visual Major System 7 = L and 6 = G or K. With that we can create the word LICK. The seventysixth element Osmium sounds a little bit like ooze. This element is used for the tip of a phonograph stylus.

osmium
Your old phonograph is covered in green ooze and you lick it off.

77. Iridium

In the Visual Major System 7 = L. With that we can create the word LOLLI (remember: double consonants merge together). The seventyseventh element Iridium sounds a bit like I read a book. The element can be used for tipped nibs in pens.

You have to read this following sentence from your own perspective becaue of the I read part:
I read a book while eating a lolli and scribbling with a pen on the pages.

78. Platinum

In the Visual Major System 7 = L and 8 = B or P. With that we can create the word LIP. The seventyeighth element Platinum sounds like plate. The element is used for catalytic converter and we imagine an exhaustion pipe.

platinum
Betwen your lips sticks an exhaustion pipe with which your are dusting the plates. Yikes.
Come up with your own story or ask your students to that.

79. Gold

In the Visual Major System 7 = L and 9 = J or CH. With that we can create the word LYCHEE. The seventyninth element Gold sounds like goal and we imagine a bulls eye. The element is often stored in Gold ingots.

80. Mercury

In the Visual Major System 8 = B or P and 0 = R. With that we can create the word BERRY. The eightieth element Mercury is named after a planet. The element is used in thermometers.
