Hey steem community!
I've just joined you and received a wonderful welcome! @mariannewest was very kind and gifted me all the cards of her starter pack. Thank you so much! Unfortunately you can't play ranked without purchasing the starter pack as it seems. Is there a way to get around that limitation? Otherwise I will have all the starter pack cards twice.

I am pretty sure you can. Just tap battle or go to the marketplace but you have to have cards to play with. Wouldn't think it would be mandatory. TAP EVERYTHING ON THE SCREEN lol
Practice works, but after clicking on "Ranked" the following message appears:
