I ponder this question a lot, especially with a young daughter. I've increasingly come to see college as an investment of time and money. There are real opportunity costs. I agree wholeheartedly with the "gap year." I didn't take one. I just went along with the flow, 'cause that's what I was supposed to do.

You might find this Quillette post interesting: The Case for Dropping Out of College.

Financially for most people degrees are worth it. If you factor in the opportunity cost I think on average graduates still earn 50% more in a lifetime.

Then there's all the qualitativre gains of course!

I suppose everything is different now that 'the old days', but I left school with a single GCE 'O' Level and that was a CSE Grade 1.. not even a real one.

So I should be cleaning toilets for minimum wage?

I was always the exception to the rule... ho hum...

There are always exceptions!

NB the data actually says lower wnd degrees don't pay back finanically!

For most people they remain the most secure root to a decent wage. Of course that's based on graduates from almost 10 yrs ago.

There is a general decline on return!

I have encountered several very intelligent people on my travels who are unemployed. Being clever isnt the same as applying yourself, you need both skills.

Fair point, in fact sometimes not bothering to apply yourself can be a sign of intelligence.

I've always been suspicious of workaholic culture. It makes sense to seek a life strategy based around doing less if you ask me.

A degree's just a piece of paper (well, high quality card) at the end of the day anyway.

It makes sense to seek a life strategy based around doing less if you ask me.

Yes, life is about kicks not work.. and especially not working for someone else.

That's pretty solid advice. I agree with you on the wisdom of taking your time deciding which subject to study. It's one of the most important decisions of in life. In Finland, there are no tuition fees which makes dropping out much less expensive but a gap year spent working still makes sense if you're uncertain. It should be noted that wasting your gap year by playing computer games or something like that is not recommended.

Glad to hear they're still free.

It does make so much sense waiting... a year or even two. I think you get more out of a degree with the extra maturity too.

My goodness what a prices!

Is there any form of support from the funding helping this fund for the people who dont coincidentally have 30K hanging around?

There is something available. I'll need to double check tbh.

Actually you got me thinking there... I should check this out!

I know for instance in holland there is a support fund that you can get a student loan for almost NO interest, and with a payback time of 30 years...so this makes it doable in the end

It's so quaint to read about Brits wondering if it's worth spending 9000 pounds on a degree, for three years, when here in the states it's around $30,000 a year for four. I'd love to see a similar study done over here. When you factor in the cost of interest on student loans I suspect few of the degrees outside of STEM ever pay for themselves.

I know Zygmunt Bauman was asking the question over a decade ago - whether US degrees are worth the money or not.

It's more likely the case than in the UK. Although I agree - STEM is almost certainly the exception!

Regardless of all the graphs and charts, University is such a waste of time. Dropped out about a year ago myself. Often go back to Uni and see a lot of my friends just sitting around watching TV and stuff. But hey ho, that's life.

Regardless of that, I would just like to say hi and introduce our page and what we have to share. We would really appreciate it if you head over to our page and let us know what you think!

Stats suggest it depends - but > 90% of them pay for themselves through higher earnings!
