My Latest Bullion Acqusition: Constitutional (A.K.A. Junk) Silver

I recently came to the bothersome realization that my portfolio, particular my precious metals portfolio, is kind of out of balance. What I mean by this is that most of the silver I own is in 0.999 pure bar or round form and I don't have that many actual silver coins that were once considered normal currency.

Just to stoke the stackitus I also came across an interesting article by SD Bullion (The Silver Doctors) about the recent trend of very historically low prices of junk silver. People are selling these coins at very low prices over spot right now which is usually not the case. The article also mentions that a good number of these coins are being melted down for their silver content, which will make them a bit more rare. And when silver and gold do go up in price, these types of coins often demand a high premium over spot price.

I finally gave in to the urge to acquire some Constitutional Silver recently when I received an email from SD Bullion promoting one of their deals on Walking Liberty half dollars at under a dollar over spot price. I got a $10 face value bag of these sweet 90% silver half dollars from the 1930's and 1940's which adds up to a total of 7.15 ounces of silver.

So Here's the Goods

Some are in better condition than others and they all look their age...but I was still very happy to open up this package and spill the coins out on the table and inspect them.

It was nice to finally add some "junk" silver to my collection as my holdings were pretty small in this particular form of silver bullion. This meager spread is all that I had before this shipment came in.

I actually used to own more than this since I collected coins when I was younger but when I was in my twenties I stupidly sold quite a few of them as they were worth a decent bit of money (or what I thought was a decent bit of money back then). Ugh, the stupidity of youth. No offense to the young, I'm mainly speaking of my younger self.

I've got another small shipment coming in soon from SD Bullionand I'm eager to stack those coins up next to this newly acquired pile and admire them...

So I now have yet another thing on my to-do list as far as silver stacking goes...I want to get $10 face value bags of dimes and quarters as well. And on top of that I've decided to start collecting the 90% silver version of the 50 State Quarters. Yeah I want one of each which come in 5 coin proof sets. I'll have to order them over the course of a few months so as not to upset my monthly budget or cut into other investing that I do, but I'll get there.

So who else has a fever for Constitutional silver? I know there's a growing number of silver fiends / stackers here on steemit / in the SSG community. What do you think? Is 90% a good investment? I think so...

@cryptokeepr Great Post it seems like you know that Silver is what we Pirates like on #PirateSunday ......... Don't forget to Look @rewards-pool
You may want to come Splash Around in it..............................

Thanks for the suggestion @stokjockey, I'll be sure to check that out sometime!

I am a great fan of junk silver, not only American but Canadian and Brazilian too.

Ooh I need to check out what the other currencies have to offer in terms of junk silver! It never really crossed my mind for some reason. Thanks for the idea!

Beware of the silver purity. American and Brazilian (most) are 90% pure. Canadian junk is 80% pure. Mexican junk varies from 80% to 10% silver.

Thank you for your continued support of SteemSilverGold

Nice purchase man. I am going to buy some Chinese lunar coins in a couple of months, tough deciding between physical coins and bitcoin lol.

No joke! The struggle is real! For the past 9 months I've put whatever extra money I have into cryptos and added to my silver collection. Luckily there's times when I don't think buying crypto is a good idea (like when it's rallying to the moon like back in December) so I invest more heavily in silver and the decision of which to buy is a bit easier. But there's lots of cryptos that are at pretty good prices right now. Lately I've been buying a little bit of both.

90% is a great investment. It is really cheap right now and an easy way to add to your stack. Keep on stacking it up.

Oh for sure I am! Like I said I have another small shipment coming and I'll be ordering more next paycheck I get. I also have a bonus coming up at work in June so I'll have some real firepower to add to my stack then! I had forgotten how much I like old coins...used to collect avidly when I was a kid.

Nice! I take a little out of every check to add to my stack. I've also collected since I was a kid. Only bad part is, now I use 25% of my silver fund to buy cryptos. Trying to diversify a little lately and some cryptos are on sale as of late. +1 more follower.

I've actually never used silver to buy crypto but I have done the opposite once...Kind of wish I had bought a crap ton of silver back in December using my crypto holdings when I had huge unrealized gains....but I hesitated and we all know how that rally ended.

Followed you back as well my friend.

Yes. I like discovering the history of old coins and where they come from.

Nice additions to the stack! I have just enough constitutional coinage to make it through the apocalypse if it gets to the mad maxx scenario

It'll be interesting to see how the apocalypse plays out (when and if it plays out). My educated guess is that said apocalypse would be a results of 2 key things--rogue artificial intelligence and the ever expanding internet of things (IOT). If some rogue AI hacks its way into web connected defense / weapons systems and everything else that's web-connected, that could be the catalyst / beginning of it.

I'd be willing to guess that constitutional silver would be valuable in terms of trade and bartering, as would food, weapons, and ammunition. Hopefully it'll never come to that but we must hope for the best while planning for the worst.

I love me some junk silver. Those standing liberties are one of my favorites.

Congratulation cryptokeepr! Your post has appeared on the hot page after 28min with 20 votes.

Nice stash on constitutional. Much like you , I don't have much of old silver (Canadian version tho) but always wanted to get more, I'm into the newer low mintage coins for now. Like you said, many of them just get melted for the silver content and it will make them worth more as a collectible in the long term. If you can get them for cheap now, it's probably a good investment. Worst case scenario, it's still worth the price of silver, sounds like a win win situation.

Great buy. I think Junk silver is a blast to stack. You can hold it and don’t have to worry about getting it dirty. Great buy
