There is a double header in Saturday NFL Football today as the regular season is winding down. The first game of the day is the 4-9 Chicago Bears playing at the 7-6 Detroit Lions. The game kicks off at 3:30pm Central Standard Time and can be seen on National Television on the NFL Network. The Lions are favored by 5 points and the over/under is 43.5. Although the Bears are eliminated from playoff contention, the Lions are still hoping for a Wild Card shot.
Detroit must win today and their remaining 2 games against the Bengals and Packers to have a shot at post season play. The weight of the world is on the Lions quarterback Matt Stafford, who became the highest paid player in the NFL before the season started. Stafford is 3rd in the league in passing yards per game with an average of 283 yards. He has thrown 23 touchdowns and 9 interceptions. Golden Tate has been his favorite target and has 79 catches for 852 yards and 4 touchdowns. The running game though for the Lions has been a weakness. Ameer Abdullah has only run for 505 yards on the season.
The Chicago Bears are coming off of their best game of the year last week. They crushed the Cincinnati Bengals 33-7 and rookie quarterback Mitch Trubisky completed 25-32 for 271 yards and 1 touchdown. That was his second strong game in a row and he is showing real promise. Second year running back Jordan Howard has also given the Bears fans a lot of hope as he has gone over the 1,000 yard mark for the second year in a row.
The second game of today’s double header is between the 7-6 Los Angeles Chargers at the 7-6 Kansas City Chiefs. The two teams are tied for first place in the AFC South and today’s game will go a long way in deciding who wins the division. It has been a tale of two seasons for both teams. The Chargers started off the year 0-4 and it looked like they were destined for an extremely disappointing year. But they would go 7-2 in their next 9 games including their current streak of 4 wins in a row. They have the second best defense in the league and the 4th best passing offense. Philip Rivers is playing great and has thrown for 23 touchdowns and 7 interceptions.
The Chiefs got their season started with a bang when they won at the New England Patriots 42-27. They would win their first 5 games of the year and looked unstoppable. But they would take a nose dive and lose 6 of 8 games and are now fighting for their lives. Their struggles can’t be blamed on quarterback Alex Smith. He has a career high passer rating of 104.4 and has thrown 23 touchdowns and only 5 interceptions.
Today’s action in Detroit and Kansas City will help clear up the playoff situation a little, but there will still be plenty of questions.
