En Venezuela se le conoce como el Gusano del Maíz, pero según el país donde se le encuentre devorando los granos tiernos de la mazorca se les llama comúnmente: la oruga del choclo, la lombriz del maíz o el gusano elotero, para referirse a ese molesto lepidóptero de la Especie Helicoverpa zea.
Oruga de la mazorcaEl tamaño de la larva va aumentando rápidamente a medida que consiga muchos granos tiernos de maíz y varía entre 3 y 5 cm de longitud. Este tipo de artrópodo pertenece a la Familia Noctuidae, esas polillas robustas que han tenido la capacidad de aprovechar las grandes corrientes de aire en el continente americano para ir poblando varias regiones desde Estados Unidos hasta la Argentina.
Gusano del maíz masticando los granos tiernos de la mazorcaLa etapa larvaria de las mariposas nocturnas es de aproximadamente 10 días, pero puede prolongarse hasta 25 días, según la disponibilidad de alimentos y las condiciones ambientales de la zona geográfica donde se desarrollan. Los gusanos eloteros pasan por 4 o 5 estadios larvarios, en su mayoría dentro de la mazorca, pero en ocasiones salen al exterior donde corren peligro de ser devorados por sus depredadores naturales o impregnarse con algún líquido control de plagas.
Este tipo de insecto ha sido considerada como una peligrosa plaga para las plantaciones de maíz, pero como son animales omnívoros, también afectan a los cultivos de sorgo y algodón. En mi caso particular, no me parece de buen gusto encontrar a estos gusanos al abrir una mazorca de maíz, pero lo soluciono rápidamente al cortarle la punta y desecharla. Luego me dedico a desgranarla y preparar unas ricas cachapas con queso de mano, aunque el queso guayanes puede resultar de buen gusto al agregarle un toque de crema de leche.

In Venezuela it is known as the Corn Worm, but depending on the country where it is found devouring the tender grains of the cob, it is commonly called: the corn caterpillar, the corn earworm or the corn earworm, to refer to this annoying lepidopteran of the Helicoverpa zea Species.
The size of the larvae increases rapidly as it gets many tender corn kernels and varies between 3 and 5 cm in length. This type of arthropod belongs to the Noctuidae family, those robust moths that have had the ability to take advantage of the large air currents in the Americas to populate various regions from the United States to Argentina.
The larval stage of moths is approximately 10 days, but can last up to 25 days, depending on the availability of food and the environmental conditions of the geographical area where they develop. The larval stages of the moths go through 4 or 5 larval stages, mostly inside the ear, but sometimes they go outdoors where they are in danger of being eaten by their natural predators or impregnated with a pest control liquid.
This type of insect has been considered a dangerous pest for corn plantations, but since they are omnivorous animals, they also affect sorghum and cotton crops. In my particular case, I don't find it in good taste to find these worms when I open an ear of corn, but I quickly solve it by cutting off the tip and discarding it. Then I shuck it and prepare some tasty cachapas with queso de mano, although guayanes cheese can be tasty by adding a touch of milk cream.
