Typically as the clock strikes midnight on New Year’s Eve I close my eyes and make a wish for something I really want to achieve in the next year. I’m very grateful to say that these wishes have come true more often than they haven’t.
Last night, about two minutes before midnight, my wife asked me to open the patio door. If the interwebs are correct, this is an old Irish tradition to “let the bad luck out and the good luck in”. Hopefully it works for us because it’s been one hell of a year.
As the clock struck twelve this year, for me, it was less about the wishes and more about asking myself the simple question…
What Do You Want to Do Differently?
Hive has been an integral part of my personal and professional journey over the last six and a half years. The platform has given me so, so much…friends across the globe, outreach for my writing, an incubator for ideas, not to mention exposure to cryptocurrency. Most importantly of all, it’s given me the confidence to know there isn’t anything in this world that isn’t achievable with passion and a whole lot of patience.
The world has changed so very much since I began my Hive journey on July 5th of 2016, as have I. I very much saw the world through rose-colored glasses back then. It was a trait that served me well in some ways but in other ways it was a great disservice.
Back to the question…
What Do You Want to Do Differently?
2024 will be a year of grounding for me, of getting back to basics. This year I am going to think more of myself and my own needs.
I’m going to do less planning and more living.
Make decisions less from my brain and more from my heart.
I want to spend less time with those who zap my energy, and more time in the presence of those who fill me with light.
I want to continue to strive to be present so as not to miss out on the wonderful things that already surround me.
I’m also going to attempt to write much more regularly on Hive, with one caveat, the content will become much more personal in nature, more like a journal, and from the heart.
Thank you for all of the support and friendship last year.
Cheers to a wonderfully fulfilling 2024 for us all! May we have the strength and wisdom to learn all of the lessons put before us. As the clock strikes twelve in a little less than a year I hope we find ourselves happier, more content, and more at peace than we were when this year began. That's really all we can wish for.
What would you like to do differently this year?

Poetry should move us, it should change us, it should glitch our brains, shift our moods to another frequency. Poetry should evoke feelings of melancholy, whimsy, it should remind us what it feels like to be in love, or cause us to think about something in a completely different way. I view poetry, and all art really, as a temporary and fragile bridge between our world and a more pure and refined one. This is a world we could bring into creation if enough of us believed in it. This book is ephemera, destined to end up forgotten, lingering on some dusty shelf or tucked away in a dark attic. Yet the words, they will live on in memory. I hope these words become a part of you, bubble up into your memory when you least expect them to and make you feel a little more alive.
Pick up a copy of Ephemera today on Amazon.
Most of us have experienced a moment of perfect peace at least once in our lives. In these moments we lose ourselves and feel connected to everything. I call these mindful moments. Words can’t describe how complete they make us feel.
These moments are usually fragile, evaporating in seconds. What if there was a way to train your mind to experience more of them? It’s deceptively easy and requires nothing more than a subtle shift in mindset. My new book, Mindful Moments, will teach you to be much more content despite the chaos and imperfect circumstances continuing to unfold around you. Upgrade your life experience today for only $15.99 on Amazon.com.
Mm.. I forgot to wish something for the new year. Perhaps, it is because we have seen many bad things in recent years and things go worse as years pass by 😑
It's not too late if you haven't made your wish yet!
What a beautiful post, I love your resolutions for this year, without a doubt, they are moments to think more from the heart and do things that make us feel good. Great that we will read you more often, I love your posts.
Happy New Year dear friend @ericvancewalton may this 2024 come to your home with lots of joy, great moments to enjoy and the prosperity to be able to do so

Those sounds like some really good goals. I think personally I am going to try to just appreciate the small moments more. We've talked about it before, but it is so hard to shake that ingrained thinking of working for the weekend. As far as Hive, I will probably keep doing what I have been doing. If anything, I want to find some more people to add to my list of regulars.
Those are all good goals you have. The "postponing joy" mentality is such a tough one to shake after decades of living it. I still find myself getting into that rut sometimes, even after almost seven years of being away from the office.
I was going to say, not having a 9 to 5 probably helps.
What a wonderful post to start the new year on. And honestly, way more proactive than wishing :) knowing you, I've no doubt you'll accomplish all these things you set out towards.
Thank you! I decided instead of setting specific goals/wishes I'd just work on cultivating peace and joy again because I know what happens when we live in that state of being. Happy 2024 @honeydue!
I pray your wishes will be granted so 2024 will be much better for you than the past year. I'm certain you will bag much more success when you do the things you've planned to do differently. I wish you lots of successes and wins in 2024. Amen.
Thank you! Happy 2024 to you!
This is a wonderful question! And you gave an excellent answer. I think it can be used as advice or as a direction for many of us. May this year 2024 be much better for you! And for all of us. ❤️
Thank you and a very Happy 2024 to you @zirochka!
How nice to hear about you, your new year rituals and your new resolutions for this 2024, Eric. I too feel it's a good time to be thankful and set goals. At home, we did rituals for health and abundance. This new year will be decisive for Venezuela's democracy, so we also pray for a better future for the country.
Hopefully you will have more time to write in HIVE, to know about your day to day life. That will be an excellent way for us to connect.
I have read that this year, in all senses, for being the year of the dragon, for being a leap year and for being, according to numerology an 8 year, symbolizes spiritual power and is perfect to close and open cycles.
I wish you growth, expansion, peace, love. Sacks of good things, my friend. A hug
Thank you Nancy! I wish your country well this year and I hope you achieve everything you wish for personally! Democracy is under attack all over the globe. This is a Presidential election year for us so we're guaranteed front row seats to the circus. There will, undoubtedly, be lots of drama and big promises. So interesting about the year of the dragon. I definitely believe in cycles. It's said even our bodies completely regenerate on a cellular level every 7-10 years. It's interesting to think that, physically, there's nothing left of the "old us" once a decade. Cheers to better days ahead!
It's a beautiful way of beginning the year dear. I honestly think it's something we should all think of. What we're going to do differently. Looking forward to reading your heartfelt stories as always, Eric. Happy New year.🌺
Thanks and Happy New Year to you and your family!
I am unsure if any of that will work out.
But the train wreck is taking a long time to work out.
I believe following your heart may be better than following your head, because there is too much programming in our brains for it to make correct decisions as things massively change around us.
All i can suggest is to grow food.
An indoor aquatic system provides the best, tastiest, cheapest greens.
We can never be sure if anything will work out. All we really have control over are our reactions, inner state of being, and the things we make priorities. I feel like, for me, those things have gotten very unbalanced in the last year or so. Have you heard of this book? I just ordered it and it seems like it'll be useful for the coming years.
six and half years on hive, you have been here for a long time and I most salute your commitment to the hive ecosystem. Every year comes with resolution and improving oneself on hive is a good thing. Don't worry this year is going to be good and not bad like last year as your wife ask you to open the door the bad luck has went out.
I've been here so long I don't remember what it's like to not be here! Lol. Thanks and a very Happy New Year to you.
It has been a long time since you have been working on this platform, it is good that you have continued your work and I intend to continue using this platform in the same way. And I will not give up and I will be successful by working hard day and night because the success in life can only come from hard work, the way you have given it for a long time and you are slowly becoming successful now.
my is to do things differently in the upcoming year, focusing on self-care, living in the present. wish me good luck
That sounds like a great list. Thanks and best of luck to you as well!
What a unique and extraordinary tradition, opening the terrace door in the middle of the night. Hopefully good fate and abundant fortune will come to you in 2024. Happy New Year, Eric. God bless you.
Thank you! We just learned of that Irish tradition. We'll see if it works. : ) I wish you and your family all the best in 2024! God bless you, Eliana.
Thank you for the inspiring post Eric!
I like the symbolism of letting the bad out and the good in with that Irish tradition! I always joke and say I have to wash out all the bad, so will always do a load of laundry on that last day of the year, crazy, but I still do it every year!
I'm afraid I cannot rid myself of those rose-coloured spectacles, but will try to ignore the skeptics and not waste time and energy trying to change their mindset!
However, I do believe we can all strive to work together to make this a wonderful year!
Last year for me personally was the most awful year of my life, interspersed with some very special times, so there always is hope on the horizon.
I hope all your dreams come true Eric!
You're welcome @Lizelle! So you do something similar every year! I think the act of believing something like this will work will sometimes make it so.
I still keep the rose-colored glasses in my pocket but try not to wear them all the time because, in my experience anyway, it's caused me hardship. I agree with you about the skeptics, some people will find fault in anything and everything. Conspiracy theorists are running rampant (although I admit some have been proven valid). After a while these people become so jaded and relish in their misery so long they forget how to be happy. It's all about striking some kind of balance, I think.
I remain hopeful and optimistic and like your idea of working together! I wish you an amazing, fulfilling, and peaceful 2024 my friend.
Happy new year❤️.. I wish you can reach your goals..
Thank you! Happy New Year to you!
Thank you♥️
That's interesting. Japan has the exact same tradition. The Japanese add a twist of throwing soy beans around the house (and kids throw at dad, who dresses like a demon); according to lore, evil spirits hate soy beans. We do that tradition in the spring, but the spring used to be the start of the year before Japan switched to the Western calendar, so I'd say it's the same.
Anyway, happy new year! I hope you get all you want. Hopefully it is good to us all.
What do I want? To continue to better myself as a person. Of course becoming rich if Bitcoin moons wouldn't hurt either ;) More specifically, I want to publish more at my website, get a newsletter going, and in the back of my mind I have some idea about publishing a book of haiku translations. We'll see what I have time for!
That's incredible that the Japanese have a similar tradition! I had no idea. Thank you! I wish you the best of luck in achieving what you've set out to do in 2024! Those are all good goals. Scheduling a little time each day to work towards those goals make all the difference. If we work a little each day it's unbelievable what can be accomplished in a year's time.
I am so sure you will achieve all your goals because you are a determined woman who will always get what you want or desire. Happy new year also from this side
I'm actually a man but Happy New Year to you!
Man I mean. It was an auto correct stuff from my phone keypad
I knew you are a man 😂
In fact I didn't even see that it typed a woman
@ericvancewalton
No problem at all! Autocorrect is far from perfect. It should be called auto-mistake most times. Lol. Happy New Year!
Yea
👋👋
From the heart is always the better route. Unadulterated Eric Vance Walton is going to be awesome. Your writing is great as it is, but bringing more of yourself into the work is going to raise you to new heights. I can't wait to read what you have to say!
Happy New Year to you and your family!!
Yes, I agree! I think it's good to plot your course with your intellect but then live from the heart. I think sometimes I get so caught up in trying to create interesting content that I stray from the path from time-to-time. Thank you, Happy New Year Tamara!
Firstly, let me say something about your design... it's beautiful and it explains everything that should be done differently in 2024.
It is definitely going to be a year of greatness.
Thank you and I wish you a wonderful 2024!
May your 2024 be a better year for you than before!
I want to ignore all the people who make me feel bad, whether intentionally or unintentionally, follow strict diet rules, and balance being an introvert...
Thank you! I appreciate it! Those are good goals you have for 2024!
Best wishes for you sir.
Thank you! I wish the same to you.
Sharing on Twitter.
Thank you so much for the good things all around you did in 2023. I strongly believe you will do more this 2024. Welcome to a new year
Thank you! Happy New Year to you!
hahaha i don't believe on these superstitions, but yes, i strongly believe on prayers, i you pray to your God with true heart, he will give you what you want.
Thank you! I hope the same for you!
Your welcome :)
Happy new year 2024. Hope this year good for us and everyone will be achieved his goals this year
