Walking through the halls of your school is not an everyday occurrence, you were in a feud with the security guard for weeks before meeting him. But one day you decide to mingle with the crowds of children, hoping to make some friends. No such luck. The children of this school demand that they be introduced to the new girl in school. And they will be.
So it was, each day at lunch time you would repeat this ritual with the head of the seventh grade, introducing yourself as the new girl in the eleventh grade. You would smile my best and answer any of the questions the children of your age throw at you.
The third school week you sit in the lunch kitchen, cutting up a carrot with a dull knife, the carrots being covered with hand prints and carrot juice. Across the knife you look and see a girl about the age of the seventh graders, but it was her dress and the fact that she was alone that caught your eye. The dress was a bright green and had a design on it you could not place, but it looked like a black bird. The dress itself didn't seem to fit her all that well. It was three sizes to big. One of the arms was also missing, so it could be argued she stole it. Her hair was messy and dragged down around her ears. Her eyes were a violet color and her cheeks were a bright red.
"Yeah, that's the new girl," says one of the seventh graders, "Every day, she comes in and tells us to let us know that she's there. Then she sits alone and just eats with us, Frank I even offered to eat with her but she just said no. Something must be wrong with her. She's the new girl for crying out loud."
You scan the crowd, and see that the girl you were staring at had left, you looked down at your carrot and continue to cut it.
"What's her name?" you ask to the children.
"She wouldn't tell us," replies another boy, "I'm not surprised though, it's weird enough to be a new girl, then not to tell us her name."
The conversation stops and the food in the kitchen begins to smell really good; you are about to taste it when the door is opened. You look at it and see the girl from before, she is just standing there. You see her, but she is not looking at you. You see her hair being blown in the wind, she was laughing. The children stopped once more and stared at her. You weren't entirely sure why. You look back at her face and see the smile on it, and her finger raised to her lips. You still could not understand why she was a spectacle.
"Let's tell her!" shouted one of the children, "She can't go around not knowing how much she's ignored us!"
And so with that, all of the children pile in on her. You watch as they push her back and forth with questions, "Go on, tell us your name. Where are you from? How'd you get here?" They say it all getting louder and louder, but you couldn't help but look at the girl. She was calm and collected, she wasn't frightened at all. She just stood there smiling at them.
"Ugh, you're really annoying!" yells one of the boys, shoving her into another child.
She stood there, just looking straight ahead. Nothing seemed to have moved her at all, not even the shove, "it's strange," you whisper.
"What, who are you talking to?" asks one of the children.
"Me? I was talking to myself," you reply.
They all go back to telling her questions, but she just keeps her smile.
"Well, if you're not going to tell us, then maybe I'll have to help myself." Yells one of the girls and with quick accuracy she grabs the girls hair and pulls on it till she flings up over the table and lands with food flying all around her.
The girl stays in the same place, her smile still intact.
"What the heck kid!" you cried out, and scooted your way over to the girl. Right then a table got thrown at you sending you backwards onto a child behind you, sending them backwards. You got to your feet as fast as you could, but as fast as you were, the girl was faster than you. She had grabbed the woman who threw food, and flung up over the table and to the door. You stood there in disbelief, "She just walked out of the room, walking away from the direction of the cafeteria. How did she do that?" you whispered.
"What are you talking about?" asks another child, "What was she doing? Why didn't she tell us who she was? Why was she even touching that crazy lady?"
"I don't know," you say, slowly making your way over to a table. The girl is gone. All of the children turn around to you, their eyes wide with panic, "My name is Elizabeth. I was just meeting you all." You hold out your hand and they shake it, when you let go they all stand there looking at you. No one says a word, they all just leave. The door opens again and the same girl walks out of the room.
