In 1962, Russian surgeon Leonid Rogozov had acute appendicitis. He needed an operation, as the only doctor on the team plus bad weather and thick sea ice that deterred the ship due to pick them up from the Antartica in April. He operated on himself succesfully!

One thing to put stitches in but to remove your own appendix is pretty hardcore - trying to get my head around the psychological balance of the pain, knowledge that it may burst against the reluctance to not only go in to remove it but also have to make good to stop the resulting blood loss and post op infection risk. That’s some story!
