Chapter 16: Cameron’s next conversion

Catherine and Cameron made their way up from the downtown parts, seemingly unaware of what had transpired at the diner they just left.

Captain Moss had ordered one of his officers to take care of any witnesses nearby and get rid of the evidence.

The officer, with the assistance of two more of The Faceless Man’s men, had secured the area and started surveying it for any other potential witnesses.

The officer moved into the diner first and found two terrified people hiding in the small kitchen. Without an inch of remorse, he used the same firearm the other officer did when he shot the two police officers at point-blank range to finish them off.

Catherine, however, was aware of what was happening. She saw this in her vision and was appalled at the fact that she didn’t see that coming.

“I should have kept the firearm,” she thought.

She dropped it after she had emptied the magazine on their attacker. She tried to steer clear of Cameron’s direct eyesight since she didn’t want to tell him what just happened. She knew he would despise her even more however it was more important to get him to her contact. It’s the only way The Faceless Man can be stopped.

As they hastily made their way through the streets the sunlight slowly started creeping up as glimmers of sunlight started falling on some of the buildings.

“I know you’re hiding something from me Catherine,” Cameron said, catching her unaware.

“I told you I can’t say anything. It could put lives and our mission at risk.”

“I’m not talking about that Catherine, there’s something else… I just can’t quite put my finger on it.”

She was surprised by his strong abilities. She knew he was likely referring to what she'd just seen. No one but the Faceless Man has been able to tap into her mind, and even if he did she picked up on it very quickly then block him out. She was completely unaware of Cameron trying to see into her mind. Then she decided to change the subject.

“You will be going through another traumatic transformation. It will be hard on you, howeve,r you are strong enough now.”

Cameron just kept on walking at a brisk pace.
“We’re almost there, aren’t we?” he asked.

“Yes. You will understand when we get there but I need to keep my focus on blocking out the Faceless Man from both our minds.”

“Well, that’s probably the most honesty I’ve ever heard coming from you.”

They silently carried on until they reached a short, dark alley. Catherine grabbed Cameron’s arm and led him towards the back of the alley. In the corner, there was a small hole through which both of them had to crawl. They reached an old rusty ladder and started climbing up. In some parts, they had to grab onto the sides and pull themselves up, since the cross bars were completely rusted away. They finally reached a floor and upon stepping in Cameron noticed what looked like various electronics in the dimly lit room.

“Welcome back Catherine,” a voice rang out.

It sounded like an old, raspy woman’s voice emanating from all corners of the room.

“I was expecting you a little earlier,” the voice said.

Cameron was looking around to see if he could spot anyone.

“I’m not here Cameron,” the voice said, “I’m here to help you.”

“What the fuck is this?” Cameron asked looking at Catherine.

“This is your final step,” the voice said, “to speed up your transformation.”

“Please Cameron, we have to hurry,” Catherine said, leading him towards a table in a tiny room at the back.

“Who are you?” Cameron asked.

“Cameron, you have to trust me,” Catherine said, “Please.”

Cameron looked at Catherine and knew that even though she wasn’t completely honest with him, she was his only hope of getting Stella back.

Catherine secured his arms and legs with heavy cuffs and strapped his head securely down against the table.

Whilst sticking what seemed to be sensors all over his body he would hear the voice occasionally say “Yes Catherine, that’s right.”

“Have you done this before?” Cameron asked Catherine.

“No,” she replied, “but it’s what we have to do.”

Cameron tried to pull at the cuffs ,however, they wouldn’t budge. He was sweating now.

“Try your best to relax Cameron,” Catherine told him.

“Relax, relax,” the voice said.

With that Catherine left the room and closed the heavy-duty door. Cameron couldn’t see a thing. As quick as the dark of night came the room lit up with bright white light. Cameron had to blink his eyes a little to try and re-adjust his sight. That’s when it started.

Cameron could feel shockwaves emanating throughout his body. He could hear voices, screams, and sounds. Every once in a while he heard Catherine and the voice over a speaker in the room. The voice seemed to be giving Catherine orders. That’s when it started.

Cameron started seeing visions. These visions were of the past, present, and future. So many visions kept flashing through his mind. Cameron started shaking in the chair as the shockwaves started increasing, the sounds grew louder and the visions flashed faster. After a few minutes, it felt like he’d been strapped in the chair for hours, then it stopped.

“Cameron, are you ok?” he heard Catherine ask. He was breathing heavily.

“Continue,” he heard the voice say.

He tried to breathe as deep and calm as possible and then it started again. He could hear the voice say “Don’t stop.”

Again the strength of the feeds into his body was increased. He tried his best ,however, Cameron felt himself fading and shaking violently as he tried to fight against it all.

With the last of his strength, Cameron put all of his energy into trying to break free from the cuffs. He screamed and with all his might he ripped his right arm free, shattering the cuff, then the left. The leather strap over his head snapped as he forced himself up and jerked violently at the cuffs around his legs.

Suddenly, everything stopped.

Cameron fell back on his back and heard a faint voice say, “He’s ready,” before fading away.
