For a very long time now, I've always felt that Hive is like a pyramid, or perhaps more accurately, a layer cake. Those at the top seem to have all the cream, those in the middle are doing OK with the jam, and those on the bottom layer often get a whiff of jam.
But what about the base?
Hive has a whole slew of Krill — people who have next to no resources. It's a classic poverty trap. You need resources to post, some Hive to buy your own community page, or perhaps to join one of the many games being played on the platform.
Sadly, a lot of these users also fall prey to the get-rich-quick schemes where, for just a few Hive, you can win!

Possibly.
Thus keeping them poor.
There are, of course, many individuals doing their best to help other users. @ecency, which I've been a member of for a good few years, offers many incentives to help users grow their accounts.
I'm in the fortunate position of having enough Hive that I can delegate to Ecency and, in return, receive a small amount of Ecency Points. These have steadily accumulated over time and can be used in exchange for Ecency services such as Promoting and Boosting posts.
What I like about points is that they have next to no fiat value — around $0.002 per point — but they do have a value in terms of what they can actually do.
I haven't posted to Hive in a long time. In fact, I rarely post at all, so with all these points sitting there doing bugger all, I decided it might be a nice gesture to give some away to folk who can hopefully put them to good use.
So, I've written a little script.
Among other things, it checks:
Reputation: 25.0
Account age: 6 days
Hivewatchers blacklist: CLEAR
Recent downvotes: NONE
Outbound link in post: YES
Previous Ecency support: NONE
Sadly, I can't check whether it's a sock puppet account other than by looking at the profile, which is why the script stops at the "See account:" prompt.
The script can also add people to my own Exclude list, so there is at least some low-level policing available to me.
The plan is simple.
Every Monday, I'll randomly pick one Krill and give them 250 Ecency Points.
They can do with them as they like. They can promote one of their own posts and get it in front of more eyeballs. Given that they probably have next to no resources, hopefully the points will be useful.
I think that's quite a nice way to start the week.

I'm not looking to make anything out of this. I've got a pile of Ecency Points that I've accumulated by doing very little with them, so I'd rather see them being put to some use.
If, however, you think this is a worthwhile idea and want to donate some Ecency Points to keep the project going a little longer, that would be very much appreciated.
I intend to post the recipients on @Waves, but one of the joys of blockchain is that it's easy enough to see what is going where and who from.

I get a load of the points, but tend to give them away as I have no real use for them. I've created lots of accounts for people as I can do that for free. Creating a community costs about 12p, so not a big deal these days.
I started my account with nothing and earned bugger all to start with. I bought some as I wanted to boost my vote, but most is earned. Overall I haven't made much at the current price.
Of course there's a hierarchy, but the big accounts tended to invest effort and/or money and most of them do good work. There's not much to stop people being arseholes though. I try to avoid that stuff.
I've always said it's an imperfect system, but still better than most social media.

I think this is a fantastic and very well-thought-out initiative. It's true that taking the first steps in Hive can feel like an uphill battle for newer users, and gestures like this make a real difference in the community.
The value of those Ecency points in the hands of a krill can be just the push they need to showcase their work and stay motivated without falling into false shortcuts. Also, the filter you developed in your script seems brilliant to ensure that the help reaches those who are truly contributing value.
