Chequers - A Tasteem Review

Several weeks ago we visited Oulton Park for @bingbabe’s marathon training, and I did write about it at the time.

Later when she finished, starvation was kicking in and so we visited the closest eatery which happened to be on the racing compound and unimaginatively named ‘Chequers’.

IMG_6435.jpg

It doesn't look anything special from the outside and I was not expecting too much from it being one of these places where you are forced to eat simply because there are no other alternatives.

IMG_6427.jpg

What was offered surprised me and I particularly liked the look of those roast potatoes but ended up buying something else!

IMG_6423.jpg

As usual, the menu was quite dismal for vegetarians with a solitary offering only. I often wonder what it is like having very little offered for those who have chosen to be herbivores.

IMG_6431.jpg

@bingbabe and I both opted for the Gammon, chips, peas, and egg (or pineapple) at £9. I felt this was decent value as I could actually see the meat behind the glass.

IMG_6432.jpg

It does make a change to see what you are going to get before it’s presented to you.

IMG_6433.jpg

Service was good and were eating in less than 5 minutes. It's not like they had to cook the stuff, it was already there!

IMG_6429.jpg

The café was not particularly full which surprised me given the number of runners finishing their 24 miles of training. I would say that gives you some appetite.

IMG_6430.jpg

I have entered this review for the Cheap and Fabulous contest, but it's more a case of cheap and decent. The gammon I thought was palatable without being fantastic.

IMG_6434.jpg

The chips and peas are probably frozen but they always do a better job of when I make frozen chips. In fact, I don't bother anymore as they always taste like crap.

IMG_6428.jpg

Chequers is cheap and decent as I mentioned. For somewhere that is on a racetrack and is the only place to eat for miles, I would recommend it and would eat there again given the chance.

Next time it will be those potatoes for sure.

Chequers - A Tasteem Review
This post participated in the Tasteem contest Cheap and Fabulous? Totally possible!

What is Tasteem?

Look at your meal makes me missing about peas. Long time no eat peas.

About the pineapple, how was the taste? Just wonder about the texture.

#tasteem-curation

These places are really not built for quality food. I think I had the pineapple and @bingbabe the egg, it was one or the other! A slice of pineapple here is generally fried and fits with gammon which is thick bacon.

It was nice and fruity as I remember, but I'm going back 2 months. I have been holding this story for the correct contest.

I knew you were going to end up getting the chips as soon as I saw them in the picture. Nice review. We have a chain in the US called Checkers. They have some really great chips. My father in law loves their spicy chicken sandwich too. Is Gammon the same as Ham?

Gammon is thick bacon, its' generally served wit a slice of pineapple here. I cant remember Checkers from my time in the US, but Sizzler I do.. is that still about?

I've never seen a sizzler around where I live. That doesn't mean they aren't still here in the South West where you were. So Gammon is cured and smoked or just cured?

Posted using Partiko Android

It's cured but not smoked generally. Yes the Sizzlers were in the SW states, and I'm talking the mid 90's. Is Jack in the Box still about?

Yes. It is still around. I have never had it though.

Sizzler for the most part died out in USA. It is wildly popular in Thailand though.

Dammed if there isn't a place named Checkers (somebody can't spell :) ) at the Las Vegas speedway. I've actually eaten there a time or two because it's a good off and on the freeway and you don't have to go into the speedway proper to eat. On race days they cook stuff for booths all over the place, but it's mostly edible and good all the time.

The bar none best racetrack place ever is in Kansas City. Arthur Bryant's has a location there. Arthur's might be the best BBQ restaurant of all time. The New York Times named it their Restaurant of the Year in 1973. Arthur was still there. It's his granddaughter running the show now....

'mostly edible'.. lol, sounds like my kind of place in times of desperation!

KC seems like it would be a cool town.

I don't know why but I like that photos about the cokes, great advertisement, LOL

Sunshine is coming in place, they're in the good spot!

I truly wish there was some sunshine here, we don't see it too often!

Hm... If you are talking about conversion, £ is still valued the highest and considered expensive.

However when you look at the sense from an apple to an apple pricing, for that huge piece it is considered quite affordable because it looked really healthy - except the coke haha.

Over here for a proper roasted pumpkin it could cause about MYR6.50 with some vegetables and pasta, it could be a lot cheaper if count in the context of non conversion for the UK.

I'll show it later. Just about to post it soon.

It looks like a gas station from the outside, but really nice and clean on the inside. I moved to SE Asia a few years ago and have quite a different notion of what the word "cheap" means. But I think it all looks great considering the circumstances. I will be glad to know about the potatoes next time :)

A good fair review. I went vegetarian for about a year. The choices here were not the best TBH. Typically salads, which can be pretty good though.

Goodness that looks so unappetising (but then I am a non meat-eater). It's like a trip back in time to the 1970s! I'm sure I had that exact meal then, before I gave up meat. That would have been my choice then, as I always hated sausages. But I would have expected an ice cream float on the Coke.

Haha... apologies.. there's a lot of herbivores on Steemit, so I thought I would mention the veggie options. It was better than it looked..

I don't know how you passed up those potatoes!
All set for the marathon? Hope it goes well and you've raised lots of money.

He knee is still giving her pain but she has got some painkillers including that horrible drug Tramadol. It will do the trick for the run but I have warned her about this one.. its not good to take it on a regular basis.

Oh dear, that doesn't sound good at all. Get the run out of the way, and get the knee better. Good luck, I hope @bingbabe enjoys it.
