Taxed to Death - Nothing is Certain but Getting Screwed Over

in #taxedtodeath8 years ago (edited)

Discussions with friends are always refreshing, stimulating and diverse in interest. A recent topic often discussed and debated is the progressive nature of our income tax system. While the topic itself is extensive, and cumbersome with it's hierarchy of problems, I wanted to dive in and primarily focus on just a few of the day-to-day items we partake in and the hidden fees inside them... some of which you might not be aware of.

Things you sell

Any items you sell for profit, which is most likely something your doing these days on a secondary market (Craigslist, Ebay, etc), is a taxable event. A majority of the time selling your used items will not net a profit after depreciation.

But what if you purchased a highly desirable item and selected it knowing it could appreciate in value? You already most likely paid hefty taxes if this purchase was a new item, now it's time for more of them?

Something doesn't seem right about being subject to a "double tax" in cases you already had them in the original purchase, which is bad enough, regardless if it's sold for profit or a loss in the future.

Beer and other tasty beverages

A large portion of that tasty pint of golden goodness you had last night has a huge formula backed into it from state and local governments. It's a bit comical that tax in beer is by far the most expensive ingredient. Beer taxes for example can make up nearly 41% of the entire cost.

Buried treasure

Feeling in the mood to unleash your inner jack sparrow this weekend? Not so fast. The big treasure chest you discovered in your backyard will also be a huge win for your state.

Discovering something that has been lost or abandoned for many years to only pay hefty finder fees?

This type of edge case gives a feeling that everything is ultimately owned by your local government. What exactly has the local government done to help you spend hours strolling on the ocean beaches on a treasure quest?
