TRAVEL MALAYSIA: A famous dish to look out for in Ipoh!

in #teammalaysia6 years ago (edited)

Staying on Ipoh, we have another feature from @nazirullsafry, this time covering his favourite, famous, dish which you won't want to miss out on if you're heading to Ipoh! It's Malaysia after all, we all know how much locals and foreigners both love Malaysian food. You couldn't have a travel guide without covering it now, could you?

Cowan Street Bean Sprout Chicken and Noodles

Locals will tell you that you can't say you have visited Ipoh unless you've tried the customary and mandatory bean sprout chicken. And when it comes to bean sprout chicken, you can't ignore one in Cowan Street as it is this place which started the craze for the dish, back in the early 1990s.

It started small back then (and still is) but the news of just how epic this dish is spread all over the country and it has been linked with Ipoh ever since. It was first started by a local Chinese couple, who are now into their 60s and are still serving their loyal customers personally, taking orders and collecting payments. At this age, they had no choice but to hire few helpers to run the business and do the hard chores of running the show.

I managed to speak to some customers who has been loyal to this place since the start of the business. They told me that the quality of the food has somewhat deteriorated over the years, since now the couple are unable to cook themselves every day like they used to because of their age. Despite this, you'll notice the place is flocked to by old timers and the new gen alike to pay homage to the infamous, original, bean sprout chicken.

Lou Wong Bean Sprout Chicken and Noodles

This is the more popular spot to treat yourself to the delicacy. It is newer, more organised and almost fast-food-ish. Servings will be ready only a few minutes after making your order, that is if you drop by during off peak hours. However during peak hours the place can get pretty packed and you will probably need to wait a while for a table. Try coming straight after opening, at 6pm, to secure a table.

As you may have notice I have said nothing about the food. I'm just gonna share photos of it for you to drool over it. You can only appreciate the wholesome goodness of it all once you have tried it yourself.

Bonus

Next to Lou Wong Bean Sprout Chicken shop there is another one growing in reputation. I have been told that it is as good if not better.

Also take away a whole bird of the famous salted chicken, a few blocks away from Lou Wong, called Ayam Garam Aun Kheng Lim. A great companion with white rice and any vegetables. (And of course black sauce).
