Small place, but with heart. On half way trip from Gornji Milanovac town to Čačak. One almost forgotten monastery that has lot to say and offer.

Monastery Vujan, the monastery of the Serbian Orthodox Church, is located on a wooded slope below the peak of the Vujan Mountain. It is not known when it was founded but certainly originated from the Middle Ages.

The name of the Vujan Mountains and the Vujan Monastery originate from the old Serbian word "vujiti" or "hujiti" which means wind blowing.

At the beginning of the 14th century, during the time of King Milutin, the monks from the Holy Mountain of Atos formed the monastic life in Ovčarsko-Kablarska gorge. They founded the Obrovin Monastery, a kilometer away from the place where the Vujan Monastery is today.

Monastery Obrovin got the name after collecting or recycling the folk. The Obrovin  was the place where national assemblies and meetings were held. After the terrible crimes committed against the Serbian people by the Turks, led by the infamous Sinan Pasha, in 1597 the monastery left.

Today's church of the Holy Archangel Michael was built in 1805. The architect of the church is Nikola Milicevic Lunjevica.

The original paintings from 1805 were destroyed and part of the old iconostasis from 1808, which was done by  Stojan and Jeremija Mihajlović, old painters, was moved to the church of the Holy Virgin in Trepča. The present frescoes are of no higher artistic value and originate from 1939 and 1943.

This monastery has something special and unique and you should visit it! :)
