All the way back in August 2016, Google quietly and gently placed a surprise project onto Github; Fuchsia. Almost two years later, and still very little is known about this stealthy project. What we do know is that it's an operating system, designed to be truly universal (so it could be put on everything from embedded devices up to your mobile device and gaming machine) and it could possibly replace both Android and ChromeOS in the not too distant future.
Google might be the creator of the most popular mobile OS around, Android, but they don't have the same ability to unite all of their users devices together, yet anyway. I always admired Microsoft's attempts at creating a universal operating system with Windows 10, even if it fell short of it's lofty goals. Even Apple and their iOS and OSx operating systems play very well together, obviously, whereas us Android users are still having to deal with device and OS fragmentation.
Fuchsia isn't just another Linux clone however, as it's using its own "Zircon" microkernal, derived from "Little Kernal", a compact operating system intended for embedded systems, which was developed by Travis Geiselbrecht, one of the creators of the NewOS kernel used by Haiku OS. The interface will come in two animal-themed styles; Capybara (kawaii!) for the desktop, and Armadillo for mobile devices.
I'm a bit of a Google Fan Boy if truth be told, and I really am looking forward to giving this new OS a good try. I love my Android devices, mobiles and tablets, and after looking at some of the more recent Chromebooks, I'm very tempted to buy one sometime in the future. Google are taking on the big boys with Fuchsia, and maybe they should start worrying. Apple don't seem capable of innovating anymore, Microsoft just can't get their mobile devices into the hands of consumers and meanwhile Google is ploughing ahead with their plans of dominating the tech world. Let's just hope that although Alphabet removed the mission statement of "Don't do evil", they keep the sentiment behind it.
If you're the lucky owner of a Google Pixelbook you can download the files to your device and have a play around with a preview version of Fuchsia. The rest of us can still check out a basic web-based demo (see screenshot at the top of the post).

After reading the wiki I think a good possibility for this OS is in VR/AR due to the "Flutter" software and Vulcan graphics mentioned in the wiki. There are a lot of hardware devices from various companies and small projects - having a unified OS would probably speed development and adoption. I'm a fan of innovation but Google already has too much ownership of the datascape I would prefer to see it in smaller hands but I realize too smaller groups probably do not have the funds to sustain a long term project. Welp at least it's on GitHub and they're trying to be not-evil for now.
I haven't rummaged through the wiki yet, that sounds interesting. Fragmentation is a real problem for Android, and it just doesn't really interact with ChromeOS well.
At least this project is Open-Source, so anyone else can pick it up and go with it. I wonder how they're gonna prevent fragmentation though.
