Coding in Virtual Reality

in #technology6 years ago

So it's been a few years since we were impressed with the holographic interface of Minority report to later been enhanced with Ironman.

VR has seen a resurrection in the past 8 years, with the coming of the Oculus and HTC Vive as well as the Samsung Gear to a smaller degree.
There has been a lot of games and apps coming to this platform however there still a lot of different distributions and the games are slowly maturing to see what works as far as entertainment.

One space that hasn't been seen as much is the geeky side of coding on this new interface. As opposed to mobile, the VR environment could present more interactivity and improvements over the way code is looked at. From having a space of code that remenise to the famous multiplexers like screen or tmux where your code is distributed in an array of screens. VR can present an environment of code that could interact with the developer. From their git commits to find an array of directories and files that have been modified and when in time they have.

Here comes PRIMITIVE, the application that do something like that. Still very primitive (pun intended) but it gives you an idea of what can be achieved with the code today. Some of the feedback that I have got is that is hard to read code (or anything) on VR. So I should be aware of this factor. However I dont loose hope of this could become a great development environment. Lets just hope the code becomes smarter, like having ctags and having some interactivity between the relations of the files.

If you think you are not ready for this, I also want to drop this video of a guy that immerse himself

Do you think VR could be a home for you? How long will you last living in VR? Will your coding skills improve in a VR versus having expensive 2D monitors? Please leave a comment.

VR coding is not only exciting but opens up a load of other opportunities, though I feel that for new aspirant coders, a good intro to the world of coding is missing, so guys, no worries, check out this article on, What Is Coding? for all your basic questions answers. I hope this helps too. thanks again
