Surgical Glue to Replace Sutures

An injury is painful, but what makes it worse it the need to get stitches. Stitches and sutures take time to heal and need regular care. Scientists have come up an alternative to stitches. They have developed a glue based on methacryloyl-substituted tropoelastin (MeTro) which can replace sutures.

The glue can be used instead of both external and internal sutures. MeTro is a hybrid elastic protein that is extremely simple to use. It just needs to be applied onto the wound and that will seal the wound and start the healing process. The glue, which is originally in a liquid form turns into a gel form when it comes in contact with the skin. After it turns into a gel, it should be exposed to a UV light which cures it and locks it with the surface of the tissue to which it was applied.

This glue reduces the time of both sealing the wound and the healing of the wound when compared to sutures. There is a degrading enzyme that is built into the glue that can make the suture last a particular amount of time. The glue has been tested successfully o pig lungs and rat lungs and arteries.

Once this glue is manufactured commercially, it can save many lives that are otherwise lost due to loss of blood because the wound was not closed properly and not in sufficient time. This can be a lifesaver during accidents and in war zones when there is not enough time to stitch the wounds. Since the gel degrades, there is no need for patients to return for removing the stitches.
