The Reality of Extending Reality: VR is Maturing, AR Still Adolescent

This curve is the Gartner Hype Cycle, placing emerging technologies across five phases.

You can see Virtual Reality (VR) is on a Slope of Enlightenment, while Augmented Reality (AR) is midway through a Trough of Disillusionment.

That said, at Oculus Connect this year CTO John Carmack reminded everyone that we’re only 1% down the road with VR.

And Apple released ARKit 2 with stunning multiplayer AR, so this don’t take the curve for gospel.

It is an interesting lens for viewing immersive technology through, to help set expectations while championing their use.

I don’t know that I agree that the peak of productivity is lower than the initial hype for successful technologies.

I don't know; this is kind of in the eye of the person who judged the hype at each stage.

lol maybe crypto was needed to push video cards to get them fast enough to produce good enough VR... maybe not so much but it's like we JUST now got to thr point where VR headsets are cheap enough for consumers
