The Pareto principle: we work at 20% - we get 80% of the result
Greetings! Who among us did not dream to become more effective? Do not spread your nonsense and achieve your goals faster? Here you have a ready solution - the 80/20 rule or the Pareto Principle: a simple and understandable thing,
How was the 80/20 rule invented?
The Pareto principle was invented by the Italian economist Vilfredo Pareto in the distant 1897. In practice, it was only used in the second half of the twentieth century.
According to legend, the idea of 80/20 lit up Wilfredo Pareto in ... a garden. Pottering in the garden, he noticed that about 80% of the peas are concentrated in 20% of the pea pods. Moving the regularity to the economy, he made a bold conclusion at that time: 80% of all the wealth of Italy belong to 20% of people. Analyzing a bunch of data, the economist suggested that this trend of distribution of wealth is valid for any historical era and any state system.
It is interesting that, having become the author of a new pattern, Wilfredo Pareto never gave it a complete look. The official "parent" of the "20/80" principle was J. Juran, an American business consultant in the field of management. In 1947, he tested the theory of the Italian scientist in practice, made sure of its justice and ... nobly named in honor of the discoverer.
However, Kokh's book "Principle 20/80: secrets of achieving great results with less effort" brought popularity to the principle. For the first time the book was published in 1997, and later translated into 34 languages.
What is the essence of the "20/80" principle?
The idea of the Pareto principle is simple and, at first glance, terribly unfair: "Only 20% of all efforts bring 80% of the result. The remaining 80% of the effort is sprayed into a miserable 20%. "
Something in it is definitely there. Here are some examples:
• 20% of buyers bring the company 80% of profit
• 80% of the time a person wears 20% of his clothes
• 20% of the population own 80% of wealth
• 20% of criminals commit 80% of all crimes
• 20% of investments give the investor 80% of profit
• 80% of the time each of us holds in society 20% of people he knows
• 80% of all Internet traffic falls on 20% of sites
The Pareto principle forces us to look at the usual things from the other side! Agree, we are used to the stamps of the format: "there are no trifles in business", "every client is important for the success of the company" and "any business should be given 100%".
However, at the modern pace of life, it is impossible to cover all its aspects in the same way. And the Pareto principle, in fact, only teaches us to correctly prioritize.
To illustrate the principle of Pareto often refer to a presidential company in the US in 1960. At that moment Nixon and Kennedy fought for the presidency. Nixon recklessly promised to travel all the US states with his election program. Kennedy also focused only on the most populous. As a result, the latter won a convincing victory.
What conclusions follow from the Pareto principle?

  1. The "lion's" share of efforts does not bring the desired results. It's a shame, but it seems to be true.
  2. In order to achieve this goal, it is necessary to discard all ineffective actions and concentrate on those that bring the result
  3. In any case, you can grope those "20%" (or key points) and try to beat only them
  4. Not all business needs to be perfected
Important! The application of the Pareto law will make it possible to achieve better results quantitatively, but not qualitatively. To solve important and complex problems, you still have to give 100%.
    Criticism of the Pareto principle
Most often the Pareto principle is criticized ... mathematics. The essence of their claims is reduced to two points:
  5. Pareto law is a banal mathematical observation of the situation, when the result is made up of the action of many factors. It is clear that their contribution to the final result, as a rule, is different
  6. In practice, the distribution of factors does not necessarily have the form 20/80 (it can be anything)
Another "pitfall" of the Pareto principle. In real life, you can not always spend only 20% of productive efforts, costing no "superfluous" 80%. For example, 80% of scientific discoveries are born as a result of 20% of research. But without "empty" samples, tests and experiments, there would be no success.
    How to apply in life?
The Pareto law will be useful in any sphere of our life: in time management, business and in the management of finances and personnel.
    Communication
Find 20% of people, communication with which brings you 80% of positive emotions. Time for the remaining boldly reduce to a minimum.
    Time management
Recently I came across interesting statistics. It turns out that continuous work on one case is four times more effective than the regime of constant switching between different tasks. Especially if the tasks relate to different areas. Half an hour of continuous work is ten times more efficient than three "approaches" of 10 minutes mixed with other things (for example, watching a video or reading mail).
It remains to determine which 20% of the working time brings you the maximum result, and to plan the most important cases for this period. For example, "early in the morning after two cups of coffee before the first squall of calls from customers."
