In my last post I’ve told you about the new 4K iMac I bought and that I was not satisfied with the internal 1TB Fusion Drive. In my opinion this drive is terrible for everything but basic usage, really basic usage (like browsing, e-mailing etc).
If your using Pro applications you should avoid this drive at all times, go for the 2TB at least (this one has 128GB SSD storage) or if you got the bucks just go for the internal SSD (or just go with the 1TB Fusion Drive and replace it yourself to spare some money since Apple is asking a very high price for the SSD)..
For this test I used a free app called Blackmagic Disk Speed Test. I did the stress test with 5GB, this way it fills up the disk cache quickly and shows the real speed of the disks.. Now let us look at the results:
First I used the internal Fusion Drive and that gave me the following results:
The following results are from the external SSD drive:
As you can see this is a massive increase in speeds for both write and read (and yes an internal SSD would be even faster). So if you have the feeling your computer is slowing down on you, you probably just need a hard drive upgrade.
