Upgraded to a new 4K iMac (2017), my thoughts so far..

in #technology8 years ago (edited)

Sup Steemians, I'm back up and running again.. I've upgraded my computer setup from a MacBook Pro 13" (late 2013) to these new 4K iMac's that Apple released like last month or so.

These are the specs from the machine I picked up:
iMac (Retina 4K, 21.5-inch, 2017)
Processor: 3,4 GHz Intel Core i5 (quad-core)
Memory: 8 GB 2400 MHz DDR4
Graphics: Radeon Pro 560 4GB
Storage: 1TB Fusion Drive

The installation went very fast; I've made a back-up from my old MacBook with Time Machine and recovered it on this new iMac, everything was in place like my old machine! Right after that I installed Windows via Bootcamp for my gaming needs, so far these Radeon Pro graphics are doing a good job (playerunknown battlegrounds is a really fun game)!

After a day or so I was irritated with the Fusion Drive, I found out that only 24GB from the drive is SSD, the rest of the storage is just a pain in the ass 5400RPM drive... Last year 1TB Fusion Drive's had a whopping 128GB SSD... Wow Apple really?? 24 gigs is way too small for even general use, that means that most of the time your looking at the spinning rainbow.

So I've bought an external SSD drive from Freecom, the mSSD MAXX to be exact. This is the USB 3.1 GEN2 version with USB-C and 512GB for just under 300€. When I got the package I was blown away by the size of this thing, it's so small!

Look at this pretty bad boy compared to a lighter.. It's SMALL!!

I've installed MacOS directly on this external SSD and even got Windows installed as dual-boot via Bootcamp to work on this external drive. Normally Apple only allows you to install Windows on the internal drive! I will post an instruction to install a Bootcamp Windows on an external drive later on.. I'm using the internal 1TB Fusion Drive only for storage now.

I will put up some benchmarking with this drive sometime later, and even do some gaming benchmarks. For now, I'm happy with this fast and snappy system and incredible display!

Awesome! As an Apple adept the only device really lacking in my possession is an iMac.

Don't really need one. But I want one! ;)

Wanting one is close to needing one though :-D

I'll probably buy the 4K hdr AppleTV first and then the home pod. ;)

Does the fusion Drive learn as it goes to get faster and figure out which Applications you use most frequently and therefore would use the solid-state drive instead of the HDD?

Yes, the Fusion Drive has the SSD and HDD (5400RPM) in one package. The OS learns which programs and files you use the most and will store/move that to the SSD. Only problem is the 24GB; if you use a lot of programs and files it will still uses the 5400RPM drive a lot, so basically you will still see the rainbow wheel a lot of the time.

I recommend to buy this with at least the 2TB Fusion Drive (that one has 128GB SSD storage, so you should be fine) or upgrade to an internal SSD (cost a lot via Apple, but this would be blazingly fast). Since I didn't want to open up the iMac and replace the internal HDD, I bought the external SSD and just use that as the start up disk.

Sweet stuff! Must feel pretty good, besides the fact that you needed to make another investment (external harddisk). Luckily it's a good day in the crypto space ;)
