My answer too "As a surfer, what do you think of Tesla's surfboard?"

in #tesla6 years ago

This might be the best question I’ve seen on Quora….

The Tesla surfboard is… AWESOME and here’s why

Aesthetics

This surfboard looks incredible, the lines are clean, the colors are epic, overall this is a sexy board. For $1,500USD (although the supply was limited) it is relatively affordable and surfable.

Design

For those that don’t know surfing, Matt Biolos is a legendary shaper for …Lost surfboards.

After Tesla reached out to Biolos, “we ended up talking to someone in their design team and they said they wanted to make a surfboard,” Biolos said in an interview this week.

####They sent drawings over, and Biolos told them what was possible and what wasn’t. He sent them examples of carbon fiber boards and built samples.

“They were so precise in the finish they wanted,” Biolos said. “We tried to nail it a couple times it was really hard.”

Functionality

The board made is a replica of Biolos’ personal board, a 6’8 made to fit inside select Tesla models.

This board looks like it would rip, although with its sleek design a pressure ding might be a bummer.

It is a 6′8 tri fin with an FCS fin setup, with the board being constructed of mostly carbon fiber. The teardrop pintail and mellow looking rocker makes this board super exciting to look at.

“They showed a passion, they came down to our dirty little surfboard factory,” he said. “They were stoked and excited.”

Biolos doesn’t expect a massive boom in business from the collaboration, as most of the people reading the national business stories about the surfboard come from outside of the surf world.

Of all the news articles – from USA Today to Fortune.com and other national news – no one has actually called him for his take on the surfboard collaboration, he said.

“There’s a lot of eyes on it, but those eyes don’t affect my business.”
