This is a very good analysis and I would imagine this took you quite some time to create. Do you think creating a seperate symbol for reducing rewards, not the flag would be a good idea?

thats actually what im going into in part 2.
The change from a down chevron to a flag was a terrible idea, IMO. The motivation behind it was to discourage people from using it like a right swipe. but it backfired.
Theres two problems. One is that its bad to tell people how they should vote under any circumstances. If trump is running against clinton, and i alter the ballot to discourage people from voting for trump, I have done an injury to the proccess.
Even if my discouragement is reasonable. For example, the whole fake news thing became a thing because some people thought that people voted for trump because they saw bad things about clinton that weren't true (and spread by russians i guess)
But imagine we had found out about this a week earlier. Even if we could know with 100% certainty that russians really had spread dirty lies about Clinton, it would still be harmful to the democratic procces to post a warning on the ballot like "you may have heard this and that about Hillary clinton on the internet. Please disregard it when making your decisions."
Also, just the way the flag is displayed, causes unnecessary butt-hurtedness.
I want to upvote this with a million percent!!! Somebody do it for me!
i will upvote it for you....
Ah, GBY sister LOL. (:
I know, right?? I came across him in a post by @generation.easy and told him he needed to start posting again or re-posting his old stuff :)
Could not agree more.
I think there should be a "reduce rewards" button that does not affect reputation score. The flag is connected to reputation damage, and I think that's bad when just trying to even out reward payouts.
The flag technically doesn't reduce your rep unless your post goes below $0.00 and becomes censored. The same way your post rewards don't belong to you until after the payout, any increase in your reputation is not yours until after the payout. So the downvotes only decrease your pending increase in reputation.
if my understanding is correct, your increase in happens immediately when the voting does.
But the net effect is yeah, any post that has a postive payout will also have a positive impact on reputation. I think a lot of the concern about reputation comes from early cases before there was a slider where one giant overkill whale flag on a comment with no upvotes or something would tank someones reputation completely.
Mostly correct. There are a few technical edge cases where it might not be, but not worth worrying about.
For this reason it would actually be a bad idea to separate downvote from rep. The current mechanism is correct, except for the biased icon on the UI.
I have created a github issue a while back and the discussion included whether the UI should tell voters how to vote (I think not): https://github.com/steemit/steemit.com/issues/215
i didn't know that
