This volcano erupts the coldest black lava in the world -TIL

in #til7 years ago (edited)

In Tanzania, you can find this weird volcano named Ol Doinyo Lengai  meaning “Mountain of God”and it erupts so cold lava that it’s almost always black. It's lava erupts at temperatures never exceeding 500 °C, while one of the most common lava types on the planet (basalt) reaches 1000 °C.

Thanks to the lack of silica molecules, this strange lava flows like water, creating true 'rivers' and the speed rarely exceeding 10 kilometers per hour. Unlike most lava, the Ol Doinyo Lengai lava contains a lot of alkaline elements such as sodium, calcium and a large amount of carbon dioxide.

It is extremely rich in sodium and because of that is a particular 'natrocarbonatite' lava. This particular volcano has never erupted 'natrocarbonatite' lava but, for modern people this is a great thing. This type of lava contains a lot of rare elements that are a vital component of modern electronic equipment.

The melting point of all of these molecular chains is far lower than that of any silica lava, which is why it erupts so coolly.  In fact, this volcano is fairly unthreatening, even when it erupts explosively.  The most recent occurred in 2008 and it didn’t cause any trouble.

I loved this post. 500 C is still 932 F so I wouldn't drop a kayak in there. 🙂

Thank you very much! I read that a man fell into that lava and survived!
