One of the largest, oldest, and best-preserved castles in Ukraine. Construction of the Upper Castle began in the 1350s and was largely completed in 1430, although some elements (such as the height of the towers) still changed over the following centuries. The surrounding castle began to be reconstructed in brick in 1502. From the time of construction, the castles were the residence of the Grand Duke, and after the Union of Lublin - the residence of the royal government, where the political, administrative, judicial, defense, religious functions of the center of Volyn Voivodeship were concentrated.

In 1429, the Prince's Palace, located in the Upper Castle, hosted a congress of European monarchs, which aimed to resolve political and economic issues in Central and Eastern Europe and resolve the issue of the coronation of Vytautas. The castles were repeatedly attacked. Thus, in 1431, during the "Lutsk War", the castles withstood the siege of the troops of political opponents of the Grand Duke of Lithuania Svydrygail. In 1595 the castle was taken by Severin Nalyvayko's military units.
