How to Find the Best Deals on Airline Flights: Tips from our Research and Experience in Moving People All Over the World

in #travel8 years ago (edited)

Traveling is very exciting, and taking care of the fine details can make for smooth sailing. We want to share our tips for finding the best deal on a flight so everyone can benefit from our extensive research and experience!

The Eden Knights will travel thousands upon thousands upon thousands of miles in the next few weeks. Part of our crew is going south to scout sites for Eden 2.0 while others are headed to Amsterdam for Steemfest, so we've been looking for and booking flights all over the world.

We'll have tales of adventures to share soon enough, but for now we'll stick to helpful reference.

Trip planning can be an enjoyable aspect of travel, especially when you start finding great deals! Here are our tips to find a great deal on a flight:

Search from an incognito window in your browser. This deletes browsing history and web cache. Flight websites access your data to manipulate the prices based on your searches. Incognito windows don't store data, and the prices won't be changed.

Use a comparative flight site like Kayak or Skyscanner to get ballpark figures. You can use them to search +/- 3 days around your departure date as well; if you have some flexibility in your schedule, it's great to see a side by side comparison. It's relatively cheaper to fly on a Tuesday.

Check early, and check often! The closer you get to your flight date, usually the more expensive the ticket. We've had the best success using dates at least 2 weeks out.

It's definitely worth the effort to research and compare.

  • Search the major cities to fly out of in your country, and the major cities to fly into in/near your destination. For a flight from the US to Amsterdam, we searched flights out of DFW, Denver, Chicago, LAX, Las Vegas, Houston, Washington, D.C., Miami, Boston, NYC, Newark, and Baltimore. We searched for flights landing in Amsterdam, London, Paris, Frankfurt, Madrid, Barcelona, Zurich, Oslo, and even Istanbul.
  • Search round trip and one way flights.
  • Try piecing together your own itinerary. Find the flights for each leg, and individually search for them. Then head over to the airline's own website to see if it's any cheaper than the comparative site. A dollar might not make much of a difference, but if you have 6 or 8 flights and each carrier's site is actually $5 or $10 less than the comparative site, you can save a significant amount.

Investigate fees! Some airlines offer super cheap flights, but then charge for everything from a ticket to selecting a seat to even carry-on luggage! US domestic airlines are adopting a fee even for the first checked bag. United, Delta, and American Airlines still offer a free carry on, but now charge for any checked luggage. Consider how much stuff you will actually need in your destination!

We are incredible packers.

Great info for trip planning. I'm excited to share more travel tips from my journey with @everlove, and I can't wait to hear stories from the Eden Knights in the southern hemisphere!

The Eden Knights will have many valuable contributions to the travel category in the foreseeable future!

Times are a changing for sure and with high level skills, things are definitely more smoooooooth and easy. Thanks for the insight.

Thanks for the great tips. The one about the incognito window is a winning tip. Congrats on getting the funds to go to Amsterdam. Sending big green hugs from California.

Sharing tips saves the next person time and effort!

Hey guys... have you checked out Wow airlines? I checked some days ago and they still had really cheap flights at around $500 round.. they fly out of SF, LA, NY, MIAMI?, DC .. (Note: Expect bad service, possible delays and it's most likely not the most comfortable experience for a long flight and they charge a lot for extras, but if the base price is the priority Wow airlines is probably your best choice! Remember you don't have to pay extra to reserve seating if you don't care where you sit....)

Thanks @steemrollin! We did find a roundtrip WOW flight LAX to AMS for $420 (with layover in Iceland!), but the fees for carry on luggage alone made it prohibitive. We found roundtrip Miami to Amsterdam under $500 with TUIfly. We're looking forward to being part of Steemfest!

Wow great job! Yeah there are a lot of extra costs with Wow... TUIfly sounds like a fantastic option! See you there! When are you arriving?

Our Eden Maidens land on Tuesday, November 8. They've never been to Amsterdam are are excited to check out the city! When do you get there?

Same day! We can take field trips with everyone who gets there early! lol. I know some others arriving on the 9th.. and I'm sure even more will be there on the 10th. Not sure what people will be interested in doing or going, but it would be great to get together early at least for coffee/breakfest/lunch/dinner on the early days. Are you staying at Vokshotel all week? I have three nights there and three nights at an Airbnb close by.

That will be so fun--the Steemians take Amsterdam! @everlove and @saramiller have accommodations for Nov 9-11th, and are looking for solutions for the other days. They would love to meet up and partake of any/all Steemit adventures! @everlove is particularly excited to collaborate on art with @opheliafu, and @saramiller is always down to do yoga anywhere and everywhere. Please keep us in the loop for any meet up plans!

Sounds good! Yeah there might be spare rooms available for share during the conference. I requested twin beds for my room, but don't think I got it. I good meeting spot will be the Volkshotel.. and I guess everyone can connect via Steemit.chat #steemfest channel... have to make sure I have a phone that will work over there. ttyl!

What a helpful bunch you are!

I'd considering going to Steemfest too, but they don't allow certain peppers on planes (potential hijacking mechanism and all) and I'd prefer not to travel alone without my peppers......

Maybe when steemit rebounds and I get that private jet...

I am READY to see some steem-fest posts!! Ahhhhhhh I am so happy and wish All of you, @quinneaker @saramiller @everlove @inokalrutz and @kotamdickson safe travels!! Please be safe and I love you all!
