There is no reason why you can’t take your dog on vacation with you. It can help alleviate the stress of having to board them or find a pet sitter. To travel successfully with your dog you just need to do your homework in advance. This includes finding hotels, restaurants and parks where you can take them along.

If your dog is used to being in a crate then travelling will be fairly easy on them. If you plan on using one for the first time, then prepare them in advance. Ensure that their collar cannot get trapped in the bars of the crate and don’t leave any toys with them that might pose a danger.

Practice using the crate at home and use it for short trips to the grocery store or for vet appointments. When placing your dog in the crate use a gentle voice and make it sound like a fun place to be in. Only leave them alone for a few minutes at a time and work up to longer periods.

When driving with your dog have them ride in the back of the vehicle if too large for a crate. Safety wise this is a much better option, if you have to stop quickly, they are less likely to be thrown forwards and get injured.

Stop as often as you can and let your dog out for a quick walk and time to relieve themselves. Don’t forget to take along treats and extra water for them. Please always leave your car window open for fresh air, especially during the hot, summer months.
Many hotel chains now accommodate dogs. Do your research before you leave so you know which ones to book. There may be certain restrictions for the size and breed of your dog. You shouldn’t have any issues finding hotel accommodation, as travelling with your pet is more common place than you might think.

Always leave a contact number with the hotel if you are going out and leaving them alone. Practice leaving them in your room while you go for breakfast. Try to avoid leaving them for hours upon hours in a strange room. They may start to bark, howl or cause a major upset or damage to the room.

Dogs love to explore new places too. Make time to keep up with their regular exercise routine as much as possible. Look for local dog parks and beaches and spend time there with your dog.

Travelling with your dog can really be a wonderful time for you all. Ensure that you have lots of their favorite treats and food with you. It can be helpful to take along their dog bed and favorite toy too. This way your dog will be calm and just so happy that they weren’t left behind.
