The journey from Cusco to Machu Picchu.
*The Sacred Valley, Ollantaytambo
Ollantaytambo is a village in the Sacred Valley of south Peru, set on the Urubamba River amid snow-capped mountains. It's known for the Ollantaytambo ruins, a massive Inca fortress with large stone terraces on a hillside. Major sites within the complex include the huge Sun Temple and the Princess Baths fountain. The village's old town is an Inca-era grid of cobblestoned streets and adobe buildings.
A taxi from Cusco is the best option for most travelers, but for the budget-minded traveler, a shared colectivo or even local bus costs just a few Soles.
There are different ways to get there I recommend taking a taxi to Ollantaytambo and stain the night before going in train to Aguas Calientes.
*Ollantaytambo to Aguas Calientes the travel time is (1h50m).
From Ollantaytambo Train station, Peru Rail and Inca Rail train operators offer about 15 – 19 daily outbound services (depending on the season) from 6am – 7pm. To get to Ollantaytambo Train Station, you can either travel directly from your hotel in the Sacred Valley (easiest option)
Both are recommended!
How to Get to Machu Picchu?
About 70% of people the travelling to Machu Picchu will take the train from Ollantaytambo Train Station to Aguas Calientes (1h50m), and then a 40 minutes shuttle bus ride up to the mountain to Machu Picchu.
